Baseball Preview: Eastern New Mexico

ON DECK
The Tarleton Texan baseball team will open-up Lone Star Conference play this weekend with a four-game set against Eastern New Mexico at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex, which is set to get underway this Friday, Mar. 15 at 3 p.m. The Texans and Greyhounds will play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.) before closing out the series on Sunday (1 p.m.).
 
ABOUT THE TEXANS
• The Texans have won a season-high five consecutive games heading into the week, with its last win coming against McMurry in Abilene back on Mar. 5.
• Tarleton has averaged 10.0 runs per game during its current five-game winning streak, hitting .405 as a team with 68 hits (eight doubles, five triples, one home run).
• The Texans stole 21 bases in 27 attempts over the past five games. Tarleton currently leads the LSC with 52 stolen bases on the season.
 
TEXANS AT THE PLATE
Alvaro Moreno leads the Texans at the dish with a .413 batting average. He has collected 31 hits in 75 plate appearances and has a pair of doubles to go along with one home run.
Ryan Small leads the team with 10 doubles this season, which is first in the LSC.
• Three different Texans (Matt Olive, Lola Fajide, Rustin Thomas) lead the team with two triples each on the year.
Colten Boothe has hit a team-high two home runs on the season.
 
TEXANS ON THE MOUND
Matt Buckmaster leads the Texans with three wins on the season and a 0.92 earned run average. He is tied with Pete Perez in strikeouts as both pitchers have 28 K's heading into the weekend.
Landon Thompson and Garrett Kelly each have a team-high three saves on the season.
 
ABOUT THE GREYHOUNDS
• Eastern New Mexico head coach Chris Terry is in his second season with the Greyhounds. He brings in a collective record of 25-37 into the weekend's series against the Texans. He is 0-4 against the Texans.
• ENMU leads the LSC in hitting with a team batting average of .379. The Greyhounds have a league-best 201 hits this season with 31 doubles, five triples and eight home runs.
• The Greyhounds have scored an LSC-best 132 runs this season.
• ENMU's pitching staff has a league-worst 6.91 ERA, having given up 115 runs on 158 hits. Greyhound pitchers have walked 65 batters and struck out 80 hitters so far on the season.
• Colten Sims leads the conference with a .582 batting average and four home runs. He has drove in 19 runs this season.
• Rafael Romo is second on the team with a .514 batting average and Daniel Binz leads the team with seven doubles.
• Japreet Shergill leads the team with a 3.86 ERA in four appearances this season. Brett Humphries, Ben Monticello and Ryan Pruitt each have a team-best two wins each.
• Monticello leads the team with 28 strikeouts on the season.
• Kyle Kesmarki is 2-0 with a team-high two saves on the year. 
 
SERIES NOTES
• The Texans lead the all-time series 53-33-1 and have won eight consecutive games heading into the weekend.
• Tarleton has won nine out of the past 10 games and the Texans are 11-5 when playing the Greyhounds under head coach Bryan Conger.
• The Texans have swept the season series against ENMU over the past three seasons. Tarleton went 4-0 against the Greyhounds last season in Portales, N.M. Tarleton outscored the Greyhounds 53-16 in the series last season.
• ENMU's last win over the Texans came on Feb. 27, 2010 in Portales, N.M. The Greyhounds last win in Stephenville came back on Mar. 7, 2009.
 
AROUND THE LSC
• Tarleton's .317 team batting average is fourth highest in the LSC and the team's 3.55 ERA is thrid-best in the league.
• The Texans have committed just 19 errors on the season, which ranks second-least in the conference. Tarleton is second in the league with a .971 fielding percentage.
• Buckmaster is fifth in the league with his 0.92 ERA. He is tied for fourth with three wins this year.
• Moreno is second in the LSC with 31 hits (1.72/game). His .413 batting average is eighth in the conference. He leads the league with 20 runs batted in.
Evan Robinson is sixth in the LSC with eight stolen bases.
• Tarleton's 19 runs scored against Arlington Baptist on Feb. 23 are a league best.
• The Texans combined for a season-high 14 strikeouts on Feb. 9 against Ouachita Baptist, which also is a single-game high among teams in the league.
 
GOIN' YARD
• Tarleton's Colten Boothe leads the team with two home runs this season. He has a home run at home and then hit a bomb against Cameron in Abilene.
Alvaro Moreno was the first Texan to go yard this season, hitting a dinger into the left field seats at Houston's Minute Maid Park against Arkansas Tech.
 
UP NEXT
• The Texans will face Texas Wesleyan in Fort Worth on Tuesday, Mar. 19 before returning to LSC play next weekend against West Texas A&M in Canyon.
• The Texans and Buffs will play a four-game series beginning Friday, Mar. 22 at Wilder Park.
