Pete Perez gave up just two runs and struck out six batters in a complete-game win as the Texans downed Eastern New Mexico 17-2 in seven innings at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex in Stephenville on Friday.
The Texans (12-6-1, 1-0 LSC) opened Lone Star Conference play with a win over the Greyhounds (11-7, 0-1 LSC) and pushed its current win-streak to six games. Tarleton has defeated ENMU in nine straight games dating back to the 2011 season.
Perez (3-0) picked up his third win of season and has consecutive complete-game victories to his credit as well. The senior right hander gave up a run to the Greyhounds in the first and third innings, but settled down his offense did the rest.
All nine hitters that stepped into the batter's box on Friday collected at least one hit on the evening.
Nico Moran led the offense with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate, scoring three runs and collecting one run batted in.
Alvaro Moreno went 2-for-4 with a home run, his second of the season, and driving in a game-high five runs.
Fola Lajide and
Jared Musgrove each hit their first home runs of the season on Friday as well.
Tarleton scored 3 runs in the first to take a 3-1 lead and after going scoreless in the next two innings, the Texans put up six runs in the fourth inning and four more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
The Texans tallied 15 hits on the day, walked four times and struck out just two times.
ENMU's Ben Monticello 2-2) took the loss for the Greyhounds as he gave up six runs in 3.2 innings of work. He allowed six hits, walked three and struck out a pair of Texan batters.
The Texans and Greyhounds will resume the four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex.
Miguel Ramirez (2-0) is scheduled to take the hill for the Texans in game one, while
Matt Buckmaster (3-1) is slated to make the start in the nightcap.
