Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Tarleton's
Matt Buckmaster yielded his first earned runs of the season, but the Tarleton offense had his back as the Texans downed Eastern New Mexico 7-5 in non-conference action at the ACU/Whitten Inn Classic in Abilene on Saturday.
Buckmaster (3-1) picked up his third win of the season, giving up just three runs on 10 hits in his 5.2 innings of work. He struck out four batters on the day as well.
The Texans scored a run in each of its first three innings, taking a 3-0 lead before ENMU got on the board in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run spot. The Texans countered in the fourth inning though, as
Evan Robinson reached base after being hit by a pitch and then stealing second and third base afterwards. A few batters later, Robinson scored when
Alvaro Moreno singled to left field giving Tarleton a 4-2 lead.
ENMU put up another run in the bottom of the sixth inning, pulling within a run of the Texans, but Tarleton got three insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning to extend its lead to 7-3.
The Greyhounds scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but
Garrett Kelly (S, 3) managed to get the final out of the game and record his third save of the season while preserving the victory for Tarleton, 7-5.
Moreno finished the day going 2-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs batted in, while
Colten Boothe went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
Noah Ringenberger had just on hit on the day, but he drove in two runs in the game as well.
The Texans have won all three games played at the ACU/Whitten Inn Classic and improved to 9-6-1 overall. ENMU fell to 11-4 overall and have now lost three consecutive games.
The Texans will play Bellarmine (Ky.) in non-conference action tomorrow to wrap-up the ACU/Whitten Inn Classic. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Crutcher Scott Field in Abilene.
