Baseball Preview: at West Texas A&M

The Texans went 2-1 against the Buffs in Canyon back in 2011.

ON DECK
The Tarleton Texan baseball team (15-7-1, 4-0) will take its 4-0 Lone Star Conference record on the road this weekend to face West Texas A&M (15-8, 2-2) in a four-game set at Wilder Park in Canyon.

Due to possible inclement weather heading to the Texas Panhandle on Sunday, the Texans and Buffs will now play doubleheaders on both Friday, Mar. 22 and Saturday, Mar. 23. First pitch of game one on Friday is set for 2 p.m., while Saturday's start time for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE TEXANS
• The Texans snapped its season-long nine-game win streak on Tuesday with a 3-0 loss to Texas Wesleyan in Fort Worth.
• Tarleton used eight pitchers in the loss, including Colt Molloy who got the start for the Texans. Molloy worked 1.0 innings, striking out two of the three batters he faced. It was his first appearance on the mound since February of last season.
• The Texans had just seven hits in the game, but the team also left seven runners on base throughout the contest.
 
TEXANS AT THE PLATE
Jared Musgrove leads the Texans with a .467 batting average, having collected 14 hits in 30 at bats. With players over 75 at bats, Alvaro Moreno leads the squad with a .446 batting average. He has a team-high 41 hits, four home runs, 35 runs batted in and 58 total bases. He has struck out just six times in 90 at bats this season.
Nico Moran boasts a .424 batting average with 36 hits, 16 runs batted in and a team-high 23 runs scored.
• Both Moreno and Moran carry hitting streaks into this weekend's games. Moran has hit safely in 18 consecutive games and Moreno has a 16-game hitting streak going.
 
TEXANS ON THE MOUND
Matt Buckmaster leads the Texans with a 4-1 record and a 0.74 earned run average. He has yielded just four runs (three earned) in 36.1 innings of work this season.
Pete Perez (3-0) and Miguel Ramirez (3-0) are tied for the team lead with 34 strikeouts on the season.
Garrett Kelly (2-2, 2.84 ERA) has a team-high 11 appearances on the season.
 
ABOUT THE BUFFS
• West Texas A&M head coach Matt Vanderburg is in his fifth season with the Buffs and brings in an overall record of 117-89 into this weekend's series against the Texans.
• The Buffs are coming off a 12-0 win over nearby Wayland Baptist on Tuesday. WT combined for a one-hit shutout on the mound, while the offense tallied 15 hits in the game.
• WT went 2-2 in its LSC opening series against Cameron last weekend.
• Mitch Tybroski leads the Buffs with a .439 batting average. Parker Wood is hitting .313 on the season, but he leads the team with 21 runs batted in. Matt Redfearn and Tate Baker are tied for the team lead with three home runs each.
• Steven Diaz and Logan Hall each have 0.00 ERA's in just two appearances on the season. Paul Pulley's 0.55 ERA tops the squad with pitchers having thrown 15.0 or more innings.
• Nick Duncan leads the team with three wins on the season. Dylan James has a team-high 28 strikeouts on the year.
 
SERIES NOTES
• The Texans lead the all-time series 48-34, but are on a current two-game losing streak to the Buffs.
• WT won the season series last year in Stephenville, while Tarleton took the series in 2011 in Canyon.
• In eight of the last 15 contests between the Texans and Buffs, the winning team has won by just three runs or less. In four of those eight games, the margin of victory has been by just one run.
• Tarleton head coach Bryan Conger is just 6-9 overall when playing WT and is 3-4 when playing the Buffs on the road. Conger is 2-1 against the Buffs at Wilder Park.
 
AROUND THE LSC*
• Tarleton is currently third in the league in both hitting (.331) and pitching (3.45 ERA).
• Alavaro Moreno leads the league in hits (41), runs batted in (35) and is tied for first in home runs (4). He is third in batting with a .446 batting average. Nico Moran is fifth with a .424 batting average.
Matt Buckmaster ranks second in the LSC with a 0.74 ERA. He ranks first in the league with three complete games and a pair of shutouts.
 
DURING THE STREAK
• During Tarleton's nine-game winning streak, the Texans hit .418 as a team with 117 hits, 17 doubles, six triples and nine home runs. Tarleton tallied 92 runs batted in and scored 98 runs (10.8 runs/game).
• The Texan pitching staff yielded a 4.32 overall ERA, giving up 81 hits and 41 runs (35 earned) in 73.0 innings of work. Tarleton pitchers walked just 30 batters and struck out 59 during the streak.
 
GOIN' YARD
• The Texans hit eight home runs this past weekend in its series over ENMU.
Alvaro Moreno led the squad with three dingers on the weekend, while both Jared Musgrove hit a pair of home runs and Colten Boothe hit one. Fola Lajide and Rustin Thomas each hit their first home runs of the season as well.
 
UP NEXT
• Tarleton remains on the road next weekend with a four-game series in Kingsville. The Texans and Javelinas will play a pair of doubleheaders on Thursday and Friday, Mar. 28-29.
• Tarleton returns home on Apr. 5-7 to host Incarnate Word.
