Texans split Friday's doubleheader with Buffs

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CANYON, Texas – The Tarleton Texans split Friday's Lone Star Conference doubleheader action with West Texas A&M, defeating the Buffs 4-3 in game one before falling 5-4 in the nightcap.
 
Game one was scheduled for just seven innings, but with the game tied 2-2 after seven the contest went into extras.
 
Neither team scored in the eighth inning, leaving the game tied at 2-2 still, but Tarleton drove in the leading run in the top of the ninth inning when Evan Robinson led off the inning with a single and then later scored on an error from WT's shortstop.
 
Britt Robertshaw (S, 1) recorded his first save of the season after a one-two-three bottom of the ninth inning. He struck out two of the three batters he faced to secure the victory for the Texans.
 
All three of Tarleton's runs were unearned as WT committed four errors in the game. The Texans had just six hits in the game, but both Nico Moran (2-for-3) and Alvaro Moreno (1-for-5) extended their hitting streaks with base-knocks in the contest. Moran extended his streak to 19 games in game one, while Moreno extended his streak to 17 games.
 
Miguel Ramirez (4-0) picked up his fourth-consecutive win in game one after giving up just two runs on six hits in 8.0 innings of work. He struck out five batters and walked just three.
 
Billy Gonzalez (2-2) took the loss in game one for the Buffs, giving up the one run in the ninth inning. Dylan James (ND) got the start for the Buffs, earning a no decision after allowing two runs on two hits and striking out four.
 
WT scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 3-0 lead in game two. WT's Parker Wood led off the inning with a single and later scored on David Hebert's ground out to the shortstop. Following a pair of walks, Matt Redfearn drove in two runs with his single to right field to give the Buffs a three-run advantage.
 
Rustin Thomas led off the top of the fourth inning with a walk and he moved to third when Fola Lajide reached base on an error. Jared Musgrove drove in Thomas with his groundout to first base and Lajide later came around to score on a wild pitch making it a 3-2 game still in favor of the Buffs.
 
Moreno, who extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a single in the fourth inning, tied the game 3-3 with his run-scoring single in the top of the fifth inning. Moran came around to score on the play after leading off the inning by reaching base on an error.
 
With one out in the top of the seventh inning, Moreno doubled to center field and later moved to third with a stolen base. He then came home to score and give Tarleton a 4-3 lead on Ryan Small's sacrifice fly to deep left field.
 
Tarleton's Matt Buckmaster gave up a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning and then recorded an out on a sacrifice bunt before Robertshaw came in to close the game for the Texans.
 
Robertshaw struck out the first batter he faced, but then gave up a game-tying double to Redfearn. He did manage to get the final out of the frame and the game headed to extra innings for a second time on the day.
 
Neither team scored over the next two innings and the Buffs ended the game in  the bottom of the 10th inning with a walk-off single from Parker Wood, which scored Tate Baker on the play to give WT the 5-4 win.
 
Robertshaw (0-1) took the loss for the Texans, giving up just one run on four hits in his 3.0 innings of work. Buckmaster ended up allowing four runs on seven hits while earning the no decision.
 
WT's Andrew Elkins (3-0) picked up the win in a relief effort for the Buffs. He did not allow a run in his 1.0 inning of work.
 
Moreno finished the game going 4-5 and takes an 18-game hitting streak into tomorrow's doubleheader finale against WT. Moran did not record a hit in game two, snapping his 19-game hit streak.
 
The Texans are now 16-8-1 overall and 5-1 in Lone Star Conference play. The Buffs moved to 16-9 overall and 3-3 in conference action.
 
Both teams return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon to conclude the four-game set. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m. at Wilder Park.
