Texans fall 9-5 to Rams in Sunday's finale

Box Score SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 18-ranked Tarleton Texans finished its four-game series in a split with Angelo State following the Rams' 9-5 win in Sunday's finale at Foster Field in San Angelo.

The Texans (25-13-1, 14-6 LSC) remain one game ahead of Abilene Christian for first place in the Lone Star Conference after ACU downed Cameron 12-4 earlier on Sunday. With just two weeks left of the regular-season, the Texans and Wildcats will meet in Stephenville this weekend for a crucial LSC series.

The Rams (27-15, 11-9 LSC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but Tarleton came back to tie the game in the top of the third inning with a two-RBI single from Rustin Thomas.

The Texans then took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning when Colten Boothe doubled and then scored on Ryan Small's RBI-single to left field. ASU took back the lead though with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, making it a 4-3 game.

Small homered in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4, but ASU loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame and Reggie Rodriguez drove in three runs with his double to the left field gap. Rodriguez later scored on a balk and Quinten McKinnon made it a 9-4 game with his solo home run to right field.

The Texans added a run in the top of the seventh inning on a RBI-single from Boothe, but it would turn out to be Tarleton's final run scored of the game as four different relief pitchers from ASU combined to give up just one more hit to the Texan batters over the final 2.1 innings.

Garrett Kelly (4-3) was hit with the loss in a relief effort for the Texans. He gave up six runs on six hits in two innings of work on Sunday. Troyal Yosko (ND) started the game for the Texans and gave up two runs on two hits in 3.0 innings. He fanned three ASU batters as well.

The Texans and Wildcats will begin its four-game series next Friday, Apr. 19 with a single game at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Stephenville.
