Baseball Preview: vs Abilene Christian

ON DECK
• The #24 Tarleton Texas (25-13-1, 14-6 LSC) will host a crucial four-game Lone Star Conference series against Abilene Christian (25-16, 13-7 LSC) beginning this Friday, Apr. 19 at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex in Stephenville.
• First pitch on Friday between the Texans and Wildcats is set for 3 p.m. with a doubleheader to follow on Saturday, Apr. 20 at 2 p.m. The teams will conclude the four-game set on Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE TEXANS
• The Texans split its four-game series with Angelo State in San Angelo this past weekend and are now just one game ahead of the Wildcats for the lead in the LSC standings.
• Tarleton took the opening game from the Rams, 5-4, and despite a masterful game from Pete Perez on Saturday, the Texans fell 1-0 in game two. The Texans came back to win the nightcap of Saturday's twinbill, 4-2, but then lost 9-5 in the series finale.
• Tarleton is hitting .308 as a team, which ranks 4th in the LSC, but the Texans lead the league with a .439 slugging percentage. Tarleton's 20 home runs also tops the league as well, while their 91 stolen bases ranks second in the conference.
Nico Moran leads the team with a .379 batting average, but Alvaro Moreno is right behind him at .377 for the season.
• Moreno and Colten Boothe are tied for the team lead with five home runs this year. Moreno leads all players on the team with 42 runs batted in. Moran's 31 runs scored this season is a team high.
• Boothe and Ryan Small lead the squad with 13 doubles, while Rustin Thomas has a team high five triples on the year.
• The Texan pitching staff has a combined 3.77 earned run average, which ranks 3rd in the LSC. Tarleton has given up just 148 runs total all season - the least given up among LSC schools. The Texans are tied for the league lead in complete games (10) and saves (10).
Matt Buckmaster and Miguel Ramirez lead the team with six victories and four complete games each on the year. Buckmaster's two shutouts are a team high, while Ramirez leads the squad with his 2.08 ERA and 57 K's.
Garrett Kelly tops the squad with four saves and 19 appearances on the mound.
 
ABOUT THE WILDCATS
• The Wildcats are coming off a 3-1 weekend against Cameron in Abilene. ACU dropped game one before taking the final three games of the series.
• ACU opened the season going 7-7 before winning 11 of its next 14 contests. The Wildcats are just 7-5 over its last 12 games heading into the weekend.
• The Wildcats are seventh in the LSC with a .291 batting average and fifth in the league with a .21 ERA. ACU has hit just seven home runs as a team this year, but does have the least amount of strikeouts (175) at the dish.
• Travis Schuetze leads the ACU squad with a .358 batting average and 12 doubles on the year. Kyle Conwell leads the team with three home runs, while Kyle Giusti's 36 RBI are a team high. Giusti also leads the Wildcats with 13 stolen bases on the season.
• ACU closer Brady Rodriguez (3-1) leads the team with a 1.87 ERA and a team-high six saves in his 24 appearances this year. Carter Hahn (7-2) leads the team in victories, complete games (4) and strikeouts (75). His 75 K's on the season is a LSC high.
 
SERIES NOTES
• The Wildcats lead the all-time series 54-46, but Tarleton has won four-consecutive and five of the last six games, which includes a 15-5 run-rule win over ACU in Abilene earlier this season.
• The Texans tattooed Ty Taylor back on Feb. 28, for eight runs on nine hits in his 2.1 innings of work. Pete Perez gave up just five runs on five hits and fanned nine batters in his 7.0 inning complete game for the Texans.
• Tarleton won last year's series 3-1 in Abilene and also defeated the Wildcats in an elimination game during the LSC Baseball Championships.
• Seven of the past 19 games played against ACU has resulted in just a one or two-run win for either team.
• Over the past four seasons, Tarleton is 7-5 when playing the Wildcats on days of doubleheaders.
• Tarleton is 11-8 against the Wildcats under head coach Bryan Conger.
 
PLAYING AT THE FRIENDLY CONFINES
• The Texans are 11-1 overall when playing at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex in Stephenville this season. Tarleton has already won more home games than last season when the Texans went 8-10 at home.
• The Texans are batting .393 at home compared to just .264 when playing a true road game. 14 of Tarleton's 20 home runs this season have come when playing in Stephenville as well.
Matt Buckmaster has a combined 0.39 ERA in his three starts at home, while Ramirez has a 1.06 ERA. Both players are 3-0 inside Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex and have combined to giv up just four runs to opposing teams.
 
POLE POSITION
• The Texans dropped to No. 24 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national poll after going 2-2 against Angelo State on the road.
• The Texans have now been ranked four consecutive weeks inside CBN's national top-30 poll.
• Tarleton received votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association poll for a third straight week.
 
PLUNK!
• The Texans lead the nation in hit-by-pitch having gotten beaned 92 times this season.
Noah Ringenberger leads the team and ranks seventh in the nation having got hit 18 times on the year.
• The Tarleton team record for getting hit by a pitch is 96, which was recorded in 2009 during head coach Bryan Conger's first season with the Texans.
• The national record for hit-by-pitch is 158, recorded by Southern Arkansas, also during the 2009 season.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
• Besides leading the nation in hit-by-pitch, Tarleton ranks second among all DII schools in double plays per game (1.05). The Texans have recorded 41 double plays on the year, which ranks fourth in the nation.
• Tarleton ranks third in the nation in fielding percentage (.975). Minnesota State - Mankato leads the nation with a .979 percentage in the field.
Rustin Thomas ranks 11th in the nation with three triples on the year.
Evan Robinson is first in the nation with 14 sacrifice bunts on the season.
Colten Boothe ranks as the 27th toughest DII player to strikeout. He has struck out just seven times this season, which comes out to one strikeout per 20.9 at bats.
 
UP NEXT
• The Texans will host the Cameron Aggies in its regular-season series finale next Friday-Sunday, Apr. 26-28.
• Tarleton will honor its seniors next weekend as well for all of their hard work and dedication to the Texan baseball program.
