Texans sweep Wildcats on Saturday, move to 3-0 in the series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The No. 24 Tarleton Texan Baseball team picked up a pair of Lone Star Conference wins in a doubleheader over Abilene Christian, downing the Wildcats 12-4 and 3-1 at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex in Stephenville on Saturday.

Colten Boothe and Fola Lajide proved the offense for the Texans in game one, while Miguel Ramirez dominated the ACU bats in game two for the Texans. Tarleton pushed its record to 28-13-1 overall and 17-6 in the LSC to move four games ahead of ACU, who fell to 25-19 overall and 13-10 in conference play.

Boothe drove in a pair of runs in the first inning of game one with his sixth home run of the year – a two-run shot over the left field fence that gave Tarleton an early 2-0 advantage. Run-scoring hits from Ryan Small, Lajide and Jared Musgrove in the bottom of the third inning extended Tarleton's lead to 5-0 heading into the fourth inning.

ACU managed to score four runs in the top of the fourth inning as three runs came across to score on a ball hit by Rodge Macy that got an unfortunate bounce over Evan Robinson's head at shortstop and another run scored on a failed attempt from Noah Ringenberger's diving catch in center field.

The Texans got a run back in the bottom of the inning though when Nico Moran singled and later scored stealing second base, third base and home. ACU starter Carter Hahn decided to go back into the wind-up when Moran moved to third base and as he was making a pitch to Small, Moran broke for the plate and slid under the tag of Macy who was playing catcher for the Wildcats.

Boothe led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single and he later scored when the catcher threw to second base on Lajide's stolen base attempt. Lajide was called out at second base, but Boothe's aggressive base running pushed Tarleton's lead to 7-4.

The Texans tacked on another five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and Britt Robertshaw (S, 4) record a four-out save as he came into the game in the top of the sixth inning with a three run lead and runners on base.

Pete Perez (W, 4-1) got the win for the Texans in game one giving up four runs on just four hits and striking out three in his 5.2 innings of work. Robertshaw fanned two batters in his 1.1 innings of relief.

Hahn (L, 7-3) was saddled with just his third loss of the year giving up seven runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of game one. He stuck out five and leads the LSC with 80 K's on the year.

Boothe went 3-for-4 in game one, scoring four runs and driving in four RBI as well. Lajide was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

The Texans jumped out to an early lead again in game two when Moran hit the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for his first home run of the season. Rustin Thomas jumped on the first pitch he saw too, but his drive was caught on the warning track before Small nailed his first pitch to the deepest part of center field for a double.

ACU starter Aaron Lambrix managed to get out of the inning with a pair of groundouts, but Tarleton came right back in the second inning with a pair of runs to take a 3-0 lead and Ramirez did the rest.

After hitting the first batter of the game, Ramirez sat down the next 14 ACU batters in order as he took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning. ACU's Macy broke up the no-hitter though with a leadoff single in the top of the inning and Ramirez lost the shutout when he came around to score on a single from Tyler Eager.

Ramirez walked the first batter he face in the top of the seventh inning, but he got Travis Schuetze to ground out into a double play and then ended the game with a ground out to give Tarleton the two-game sweep and move to 3-0 in the series.

Ramirez (W, 7-1) tied Matt Buckmaster for the team lead with his seventh win of the year, giving up just the one run on two hits while striking out six. He also tied Buckmaster for the team lead with his fifth complete game of the season.

Lambrix (L, 3-4) settled down over the final four innings, but still took the loss despite throwing a complete game as well.

Small was hit by a pitch in game one and Boothe was also hit by a pitch in game two giving the Texans 97 hit-by-pitch on the season and breaking the school record of 96 HBP that was set back in 2009.

The Texans and Wildcats will conclude the four-game set tomorrow with a first pitch set for 1 p.m. at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex. Troyal Yasko (3-1, 3.15 ERA) is scheduled to take the hill for the Texans.
