Texans claim program's first-ever LSC Championship with sweep over Aggies

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 STEPHENVILLE, Texas – For the first time in school history, the Tarleton Texan Baseball team are Lone Star Conference Champions following its doubleheader sweep over the Cameron Aggies at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex in Stephenville on Saturday.

The No. 21-ranked Texans (30-14-1, 19-7 LSC) defeated the Aggies (12-31, 6-20 LSC) 4-3 in game one behind the arms of Miguel Ramirez and Britt Robertshaw, which would have given Tarleton at least a share of the LSC title. Nine innings later Matt Buckmaster and Robertshaw shut down the visiting team 9-3 to earn the program's first ever championship.

“I am extremely proud of these kids and all of the hard work that they have put into this season,” Tarleton head baseball coach Bryan Conger said. “These players have done everything that we have asked them to do day in and day out and I am very proud of what they have done on a day to day basis.”

Ramirez (W, 8-1) took a 4-2 lead into the top of the seventh inning of game one only to allow a run cross and load the bases with two outs before Robertshaw (S, 5) came into the game to record the game's final out on a ground ball to second base.

Ramirez allowed just one earned run on the day after giving up six hits and fanning seven batters to record his team-leading eighth victory of the season.

Luke Slentz went 2-for-3 at the plate in game one and drove in a pair of runs as well. Fola Lajide was 2-for-3 also with a stolen base and two runs scored.

Tarleton put up a run in each of the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Noah Ringenberger walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning and he later came home to score what would be the eventual game-winning run when the catcher made an error trying to get Nico Moran out at first following a strikeout.

Drew Reidt (L, 3-4) took the loss in game one, giving up all four runs on seven hits in his full seven innings of work.

The Texans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning of game two on a RBI-single from Evan Robinson and a run that scored on a called balk with the bases loaded. Tarleton tacked on another run in the third inning when Colten Boothe doubled and later scored on Lajide's ground out to the right side of the infield.

Tarleton put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning after scoring three runs on just one hit to take a 6-0 lead. Ringenberger and Moran were both hit by a pitch in the inning and Rustin Thomas followed with an RBI-single to left field. Ryan Small was also hit by a pitch to load the bases for Boothe and he recorded an RBI with a walk. Lajide became the fourth player in the inning to get beaned by a pitch with Thomas scoring to give the Texans the six-run advantage.

CU managed to score one run in each of the final three innings, but another three-run outburst from the Texans in the seventh inning gave Tarleton a commanding lead and Robertshaw recorded the final five outs of the game to secure the victory and Tarleton's first ever league title.

Buckmaster (W, 8-2) picked up his eighth win of the season to tie Ramirez for the team lead after giving up a pair of runs on nine hits in his 7.1 innings of work. The senior left-hander walked three, but struck out eight CU batters on the day as well.

Robertshaw allowed one run in the ninth inning, but he got CU's Nick Smith to ground out to the first baseman and the Texan dugout erupted onto the field in victorious dog-pile.

“We have come a long way and that is one of the things we wanted to do when we got here, is to restore the pride in this program and get it back to where we felt that it belonged,” said Conger. “To watch these kids battle and as coaches to ride them hard for the past couple of years, that to me has been the best part – to watch it grow.”

Conger, who won his 150th game with the Texans with the victory in game two, becomes the first Tarleton head coach to win an LSC Championship. Conger also won his 100th LSC game during the double-dip as well.

The Texans have earned the No. 1 seed in next week's LSC Championship tournament, which will get underway next Friday, May 3 at Buffalo Sports Park in Canyon as part of the first annual LSC Spring Festival. Tarleton will play Incarnate Word in the first game of the tournament at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Tarleton will close out the regular-season against the Aggies on Sunday, with a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m. at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex. It will be Senior Day for the Texans as the Tarleton Athletic Department pays tribute to 12 seniors before first pitch.
