Baseball Preview: LSC Baseball Championship Tournament

ON DECK
• The #18/18 Tarleton Texans won the Lone Star Conference regular-season title and has earned the No. 1 seed in this week's LSC Baseball Championships that are being held in Canyon as a part of the First Annual LSC Spring Festival.
• The Texans will play No. 6-seeded Incarnate Word this Friday, May 3, at Wilder Park inside the Buffalo Sports Park on the campus of West Texas A&M. First pitch is set for noon.
 
TEXANS ON THE AIR
• Texan baseball fans can catch all of the action of the LSC Tournament on the air via the Tarleton Athletic Radio Network. Tarleton will broadcast tournament games on KSTV-FM (93.1) in the Stephenville area or via the web at www.kstvfm.com.
Casey Hogan will provide play-by-play coverage of each game, with Dameon Myres serving as color analyst.
 
TEXANS ON THE WEBCAST
• All of the tournament action will also be broadcast online via a free live webcast. The webcast will include both video and audio with viewers needing only a computer with a high-speed DSL or cable modem connection to the internet. The webcasts will be carried on www.foxsportssouthwest.com.
 
ABOUT THE TEXANS
• The Texans are coming off a 4-0 series sweep over the Cameron Aggies this past weekend, in which Tarleton claimed its first-ever Lone Star Conference Championship in school history.
• Tarleton needed just one win on Saturday to claim at least a share of the LSC title, but the Texans won both games of Saturday's doubleheader to clinch the league title outright.
• Tarleton finishes the regular-season with an overall record of 32-14-1 an a conference mark of 21-7.
• The Texans now won at least 30 games in three straight seasons under head coach Bryan Conger. Tarleton is three wins shy of tying the 35-win mark, which is the most under the fifth-year head coach.
• Tarleton has not had 30 or more wins in three straight seasons since 1998-2000.
• The Texans wrapped up the regular-season batting .313 as a team (3rd in LSC) and netting a combined 3.54 earned run average (1st in LSC).
• Tarleton hit 23 home runs on the season, which is tied for the league-lead with Texas A&M-Kingsville.
• The Texans also led the LSC with 120 stolen bases on the season and 13 saves.
• Tarleton allowed just 173 runs on the year - the least amount given up in the LSC.
• Senior Miguel Ramirez led the LSC with a 1.93 ERA among pitchers that averaged 1.0 innings pitched per team game. He tallied a team-high 70 strikeouts on the year as well.
• Both Ramirez and senior Matt Buckmaster tallied eight wins on the season, which ranks second-most in the LSC. Senior Pete Perez, Tarleton's third primary starter, went 5-1 on the season with an ERA of 2.45.
 
SERIES NOTES
• The Cardinals lead the all-time series 50-23, but the Texans have won five of the past six meetings between the two teams.
• Tarleton won the season series 3-1 in Stephenville.
• The Cardinals are just 7-8 against the Texans since joining the LSC.
• Tarleton is 1-0 against UIW in LSC Tourament play.
• Tarleton head coach Bryan Conger is an even 9-9 against the Cardinals over the past five seasons.
 
WHERE THEY RANK
• The Texans moved up to No. 18 in both the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Poll and the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCWBA) Poll.
• Tarleton ranked No. 23 in the CBN poll last week and was ranked No. 21 in the previous NCWBA poll.
• The Texans have been ranked for two consecutive weeks in the NCWBA poll and six straight weeks in the CBN poll.
• The No. 18 rankings is the highest position the Texans have ever received in the NCWBA poll. Tarleton ranked as high as No. 15 in the CBN poll back on Mar. 7, 2011.
 
RUNNIN' AND GUNNIN'
• The Texans have stolen 120 stolen bases on the year, which is three shy of breaking the school record.
• The 120 steals are the most in the LSC and ninth most in the nation as the team head's into this week's LSC Championship Tournament.
• On the other side of the diamond, the Texan pitching staff and catching corps has yielded just 18 stolen bases to opposing base runners. Oppenents are just 18-for-41 (.439) on the run this season and the 18 steals against are the lowest given up among all LSC teams.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
• Tarleton ranks among the nation's top-50 in 16 out of 28 categories that the NCAA Division II level recognizes.
• Of these 16 categories, the Texans rank inside the top-10 in six of them. They include; 9th in stolen bases (120), 10th in sacrifice bunts (58), 1st in hit-by-pitch (107), 3rd in fielding percentage (.976), 2nd in double-plays per game (1.02), and 3rd in double-plays (48).
• Sophomore Evan Robinson leads the nation in both sacrifice bunts (19) and sacrifice bunts per game (0.40).
 
RINGENBERGER HONORED
• Senior outfielder Noah Ringenberger was named this week's LSC Hitter of the Week after batting .625 for the Texans with an on-base-percentage of .800.
• Ringenberger was 5-for-8 at the plate with six walks and won hit-by-pitch. He also stole six bases in just six attempts.
 
RAMIREZ TABBED ACADEMIC ALL-LSC
• Senior Miguel Ramirez was one of nine LSC players named to the LSC All-Academic team on Monday.
• Ramirez went 8-1 during the regular-season with an ERA of 1.93.
• The rest of the LSC postseason awards will be announced Wednesday, May 1.
 
UP NEXT
• Should the Texans defeat the Cardinals, Tarleton will play the loser of Game No. 3 (Angelo State vs. West Texas A&M) at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 4.
• A loss in round one would pit the Texans up against the Loser of Game 2 (Abilene Christian vs. Texas A&M-Kingsville) in an elimination game, which is scheduled to be played on Saturday at noon.
