Box Score 2 GOLDEN, Colo. – Tarleton ended its stay in Colorado by dropping a pair to top-20 teams – fighting No. 6 Washburn and falling in five before being swept in the tournament finale by No. 19 Colorado Mines.
Game 1: Washburn 3, Tarleton 2
For the second straight game, Tarleton rallied from a first and third set loss to force a game five.
Unlike Friday night, however, the TexAnns weren't able to polish off the rally as No. 6 Washburn halted Tarleton's three-game winning streak after clinching the fifth set 15-13 to hand the TexAnns a defeat in the opening game of Saturday's competition.
Tarleton fell in an early 0-1 hole after the first set, despite jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead. Washburn answered with a 16-6 run to push its lead to 17-10 and eventually claimed the first set 25-16.
In the second set, Tarleton answered the call when
Danielle Barker served up a big TexAnn lead to break a 10-10 tie. After a
Kaitlyn White kill gave Tarleton an 11-10 lead and the ball, Barker served up five straight points to give the TexAnns a 16-10 lead.
The TexAnns protected that advantage and outscored the Lady Blues 9-7 down the stretch to take the set 25-17 and even the match at 1-1.
In the third set, it was another big run following a 10-10 tie that determined the outcome – this time in Washburn's favor as the Lady Blues scored nine unanswered points to even the score and take an 18-10 lead.
Tarleton did keep Washburn from scoring back-to-back points over most of the set and clawed back to tie the game at 24-24, but the damage was done as Washburn ended the set on a kill and a block to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set went back-and-forth most of the way with no team leading by more than three with six lead changes and nine tied scores.
At 22-22, Tarleton was able to string together three straight points on back-to-back kills from
Katie Covell and a Washburn error to force a game five.
The TexAnns battled back from an early 0-3 deficit in the final game to tie the score at 13-13 before a Washburn kill and game-winning service ace handed Tarleton its first loss in a week.
Fresh off a 26-kill performance,
Stacie Murrah led the team with 17 kills while Covell (13) and
Kelsey Raglin (11) also cracked double figures. Raglin added 11 digs for her first double-double of the season while Covell recorded her second with 14 digs.
Barker led the team in assists with 51 to go along with 11 digs for her team-leading sixth double-double.
Emily Klein led the team with 26 digs while
Kaitlyn White added 11 digs of her own.
Game 2: Colorado Mines 3, Tarleton 0
Tarleton wrapped up the Oredigger Classic with a match against tournament host Colorado Mines and suffered a sweep in the final game.
In the first set, the TexAnns stayed tight through a 16-16 before the Orediggers finished the set on a 9-4 run – with four of the points coming on Tarleton errors – to take a 1-0 advantage.
Tarleton fell in an early 19-9 hole, but climbed back to make it 21-19 on the strength of a 10-2 run – served up primarily by Raglin and Klein – before the Orediggers answered with a quick 4-1 run of their own to finish off the set.
In the final set, Tarleton kept it tight through 14-12 before Mines ended the set on an 11-3 run to secure the match.
