Second half surge lifts No. 15 Tarleton to eighth straight victory

Kiara Wright, Kathy Thomas each score 20 to power TexAnns past Angelo State in LSC action

Kathy Thomas was 5-6 from beyond the arc en route to a career-high, 20-point effort Wednesday night to push Tarleton past Angelo State 74-56.
Box Score STEPHENVILLE – No. 15 Tarleton used a 41-25 overpowered Angelo State 41-25 in the second half to take a 74-56 win and improve to 11-1 on the season and 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play.
 
This win is also the eighth consecutive victory for Tarleton, tying the third longest winning streak in the 11-year tenure of head coach Ronnie Hearne.
 
Tarleton opened the game on a quick 5-0 run after Kathy Thomas and Kiara Wright struck for a 3-pointer and a lay-up on back-to-back possession. They held onto the lead and pushed it to as many as six at 15-9 with 13:50 left in the half.
 
Angelo State rallied, however, and went on a 10-4 run to even the game at 19-19 and eventually took their first lead at 21-20. The Rambelles held onto the lead until the final minutes, pushing their lead to as many as five points.
 
The Rambelles reached their five-point advantage at the 4:21 mark and failed to score again the rest of the half as Tarleton ended the first period on a 7-0 run to take a 33-31 lead into the break.
 
Tarleton entered Wednesday's game with a perfect 10-0 record when leading at halftime.
 
Tarleton and Angelo both shot 44 percent on 11-25 shooting from the floor in the opening half with Tarleton taking an advantage from beyond the arc (33 percent on 4-12 shooting) and Angelo having the advantage at the free throw line (88 percent on 7-8 shooting).
 
The Rambelles got the new half started with two points to bring the score even once again, but a Wright layup started a 15-3 TexAnn run to give the TexAnns a 12-point lead with 14:11 to go in the game. Five different TexAnns scored in that run with Thomas capping it off with a layup.
 
Over the next five minutes, the Tarleton lead ballooned to as many as 17 before the Rams cut it back down to single digits with 5:02 left in the game.
 
Wright hit a layup to extend the Tarleton lead back to 11 at 64-53 before Thomas and Brianna Bledsoe drilled 3-pointers on back-to-back possession to put the TexAnns on top 70-53. Tarleton outscored Angelo State 4-3 over the final two minutes to take the win.
 
Thomas scored a career-high 20 points, tying Kiara Wright for the team lead for the night. Thomas' 20 points came on 7-9 shooting from the floor and 5-6 shooting from downtown while Wright's 20 came on 8-14 shooting from the floor and 4-7 at the charity stripe. Wright added a team-high 15 rebounds for her 45th career double-double.
 
Bledsoe added 14 points and eight boards while Shanae Lowrance and Karli Moore added seven each. Morgan Ashmore and Raven McGrath added three points each to round out the Tarleton scoring.
 
The TexAnns shot 52 percent from the floor for the game while holding Angelo State to just 37 percent for the game. The Rambelles shot just 22 percent in the second half.
 
Tarleton will return to action Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. tip-off at Hampton Inn Court in Kingsville against the Javelinas.
