STEPHENVILLE – The 27
th season of the
Lonn Reisman era at Tarleton State got under way in a very familiar fashion – a double-figure season-opening win in Wisdom Gym with a 72-52 win over New Mexico Highlands in the Texan Tip-Off Classic presented by Whataburger Friday.
The teams opened the game in a 6-6 deadlock before a jumper by
Michael Hardge gave No. 12 Tarleton the last lead it would need and started a 13-2 Texan run that pushed the Tarleton lead to 19-8 at the 8:40 mark in the opening half.
After Highlands cut it back to nine with a bucket at 8:18, a
TaShawn Mabry layup started a new 21-9 run over the rest of the first half to send the Texans to the halftime break with a 40-19 lead.
The Cowboys pulled within 14 over the first 8:52 of the new half, but Tarleton turned things around with another Mabry layup to start a 24-12 to take a game-best 26-point lead with 2:25 left to play. Over the final run down the stretch, the Texans got 22 of those points from the combination of Mabry,
Mo Lee and
Teven Jones and capped it off with a breakaway, one-handed slam from
Davene Carter off a pass from Lee.
Tarleton shot 44-percent from the floor and from beyond the arc and 60-percent at the charity stripe while holding the Cowboys to just 38-percent from the floor and 19-percent from beyond the arc. The Texans forced 23 Highlands turnovers that led to a 29-9 disparity in Tarleton's favor in points off turnovers. Tarleton won the battle of the paint 32-20 and bench points 20-16.
Mabry and Lee led the team in scoring, each posting 17 points and six assists while Lee added four assists.
Teven Jones added 11 points in his Tarleton debut while
Davene Carter scored nine points and grabbed six boards.
EJ Reed (6),
Damion Clemons (2) and
Deshawn Riddick (1) rounded out the scoring for Tarleton State.
Tarleton State improves to 20-1 all-time in the Texan Tip-Off Classic while Reisman improves to 24-3 all-time in season openers and 24-1 all-time in season openers in Wisdom Gym. The Texans will wrap up the Texan Tip-Off Classic presented by Whataburger Saturday night at 7 p.m. against Lubbock Christian.
