STEPHENVILLE – Led by four double-figure scoring efforts and the fourth career double-double from
Ikpeaku Iwobi, Tarleton State (2-1) got back in the win column Saturday night with a 78-70 win over Texas Wesleyan (6-3) in Wisdom.
The Lady Rams came out swinging by jumping out to an early seven-point lead over the first 6:36 at 15-8 before an Iwobi layup started a 9-2 Tarleton run to even things up at 17-17.
The teams traded buckets over the next couple minutes before a 3-ball by
Raven McGrath gave Tarleton its first lead since the opening points of the night.
After Texas Wesleyan pulled to a 24-24 tie with 5:58 left in the opening half, Iwobi struck again with another momentum-shifting layup to start an 11-0 run for a 35-24 advantage with just over a minute left in the half. The Lady Rams scored four points over the final minute while a
Meagan O'Dell 3-ball in that span sent Tarleton into the break with a 38-28 advantage.
Out of the break, Tarleton and Texas Wesleyan continued its seesaw battle as the TexAnns never led by less than eight or more than 12 over the first 10 minutes of the half until the Lady Rams cut the TexAnn lead to three with 7:37 left in the game.
McGrath pulled the trigger on another 3-ball to bring the Lady Ram run to a halt and put the TexAnns back up by six at 58-52. McGrath's bucket started a 14-7 TexAnn run to extend the lead back to double-figures with 5:15 left in the game.
The TexAnns never led by less than seven the rest of the way en route to their second win of the young season.
O'Dell and McGrath led the team in scoring with a pair of 15-point performances off the bench while Iwobi had 13 points and 10 rebounds, six of which came on the defensive end.
Karli Moore also cracked double figures with 12 points and tied her career high with nine boards.
Kathy Thomas added nine points while freshman
Brooklyn Garcia scored a career-high six points in 15 minutes of action.
Bailey Wipff (5) and
Morgan Ashmore (3) rounded out the scoring for Tarleton.
The TexAnns shot 47 percent from the floor and 48 percent from downtown on 12-25 shooting beyond the arc and won the battle of the benches 36-15, with all the bench points coming from McGrath, O'Dell and Garcia.
Tarleton State will make its first road trip of the season next week when they head to Lubbock for a two-day tournament against Lubbock Christian and Texas-Permian Basin Friday and Saturday.
