Texan Baseball Preview: Texas-Permian Basin Triangular Tournament

ON DECK
The Tarleton State baseball team (5-1, 0-0) will head to Odessa this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15, to compete in three contests on the campus of Texas-Permian Basin over the weekend. The Texans will play UTPB in a doubleheader on Friday and will then play Colorado School of Mines in one nine-inning affair on Saturday.

GAME TIMES
The Texans and Falcons will play the first game of Friday's doubleheader at 12 p.m., with the second contest to follow at/or around 2 p.m. Tarleton will face the Orediggers on Saturday at 10 a.m.

LAST TIME OUT
The Texans swept a four-game series against Regis University in Stephenville this past weekend. Tarleton collected 40 hits to the Rangers' 24, and outscored the Rangers 27-8 over the four-game set. Jared Musgrove hit .714 on the weekend and Kevin Meredith hit .545 with a team-high seven runs batted in. Six of Tarleton's 11 pitchers over the weekend combined to give up zero runs on just six hits, which included starting pitchers Colten Burleson and Robert Baker combining to throw 11 innings of shutout baseball.

The Texans hit .348 as a team with seven doubles, a triple and two home runs. The pitching staff yielded just the eight runs on a combined 24 hits and tallied a team earned run average of 2.25.
 
LEADING OFF
Musgrove's .714 batting average leads the team heading into this weekend, while Luke Slentz is right behind him with an average of .563 over the first six games. Colten Boothe and Rustin Thomas have a home run each on the year, and Meredith leads all players with eight RBI.

The Texans are 16-for-19 in stolen bases on the season with both Meredith and Christopher Patton leading the way with three stolen bases each. Slentz and Evan Robinson have each tallied a team-high seven runs on the year.

As a team, Tarleton is hitting .344 with a .464 slugging percentage and a .411 on-base percentage.
 
ON THE HILL
Garrett Kelly has picked up a pair of wins for the Texans in two relief appearances, while Ethan Lenz has recorded the team's only save of the season. Four Texan pitchers have a perfect 0.00 ERA, while both Baker (1-1) and Jacob French (1-0) are next in line with an ERA of 1.29 each.

The Texans have a combined 2.68 earned run average and have 35 strikeouts to just 10 walks on the season.
 
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
After dropping its first two games of the regular-seaosn, UTPB has won five of its last six games and head into the weekend with a 5-3 record.

Jose Sierra leads the team with a .458 batting average and Trey Cochran tops the squad with eight RBI. The Falcons are hitting .246 on the season, while the pitching staff has recorded a combined 3.81 ERA.

SCOUTING THE OREDIGGERS
Colorado School of Mines will be making its first appearance of the season when they face the Texans on Saturday. The Orediggers were 22-27-6 last season and finished fifth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a mark of 16-20-4.
 
UP NEXT
The Texans will return home to the friendly confines of Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex next weekend to face Arlington Baptist in a three-game set that will begin on Friday, Feb. 21. The Texans and Patriots will play a single game on Friday before closing out the series with a doubleheader on Saturday.
