Box Score ODESSA – The Tarleton State baseball team snapped a six-game winning streak with a 3-1 loss to the hands of Colorado School of Mines Saturday afternoon at Roden Field in Odessa.
Starting pitchers, Colten Burleson for the Texans and Christian Rooney for the Orediggers, threw seven complete innings of shutout baseball, but the eighth inning managed to give fits to both hurlers.
After giving up just two hits and not allowing a walk over the first seven innings, Burleson opened the eighth frame with a walk and a beaned batter. CSM's Ray Chavarria fouled out trying to lay down a bunt, but Derek Skrdlant drove in the game's first run with a single to right-center field to give the Orediggers a 1-0 lead.
CSM's next run came across on a fielder's choice before Zach Bothwell drove in a run with his single to left field to make it a 3-0 game in favor of the Orediggers.
In the bottom half of the eighth inning, Rooney got the first two outs before dealing a walk to
Evan Robinson. The free pass prompted the Orediggers to make a pitching change as Brett Kovach came on in relief.
Tarleton's
Dalton Weeks managed to reach base on a throwing error, which moved Robinson over to third base and Robinson later scored on an illegal pitch from Kovach. The Oredigger's set-up man settled down enough to record a strikeout and get out of the inning.
It would turn out to be Tarleton's only run of the game as Nate Olinger (S, 1) came into the game in the bottom of the ninth inning to close the game for the Orediggers.
Burleson took the loss, moving to 1-1 overall after giving up just the three runs on four hits and a pair of strikeouts in his full eight innings of work. Rooney moved to 1-0 on the young season as he gave up just the one run on three hits and four strikeouts in 7.2 innings of duty.
The Texans, who tallied just five hits on Saturday, fell to 7-2 overall, while CSM opens the 2014 campaign with a mark of 1-0. The Orediggers were scheduled to face Texas-Permian Basin following its game with Tarleton.
Tarleton returns home next weekend to face Arlington Baptist in a three-game series that will get underway on Friday, Feb. 21, at 3 p.m. The Texans and Patriots will then close-out the series with a doubleheader on Saturday.
