Box Score 2 ODESSA – The Tarleton State Texans (7-1) swept a doubleheader against the Texas-Permian Basin Falcons (5-5) on Friday, with a 6-3 win in game one and a 14-5 win in the nightcap.
Nick Gibert combined to go 6-for-7 in the twin-dip, with two doubles and a pair of runs batted in.
Luke Slentz continued his hot start to the season with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate, while
Kevin Meredith collected five hits and drove in four runs on the day.
Alvaro Moreno tallied five hits on the day as well, while driving in three runs.
The Texans began the day with a four-run spot in the top of the first inning of game one with a run-scoring sacrifice fly, a RBI-single and a pair of unearned runs. UTPB later cut into the four-run with a run-scoring single that made its way through the right side of the infield and scored a run in the bottom of the third inning.
The Texans then tacked on a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, while the Falcons could only bring two more runs across in the fourth inning.
Jacob French (W, 2-0) picked up his second win of the season after giving up just three runs on nine hits and striking out a season-high seven UTPB batters.
Troyal Yosko came into the game to collect the final out in the sixth inning and
Ethan Lenz (S, 2) managed to get out of a rocky seventh inning to earn the save.
Gibert and Meredith led the Texans with three hits each in game one, while Moreno,
Jared Musgrove and Slentz all collected two hits each.
Tarleton jumped out to a two-run lead in the top of the first inning in game two when Noel Navarez doubled home
Garrett Kilgore and later came around to score on Gibert's dlouble to centerfield. A five-run spot in the fourth inning, followed by a seven-run sixth inning was all the Texans needed as they built up a 14-0 lead.
The Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and later scored another pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but
Dillon Bowers closed out the game with a strikeout to give the Texans its sixth-straight win.
Robert Baker (W, 2-1) earned the win in game two for the Texans as he did not allow a run in his five full innings of work. He struck out four and yielded just three hits before giving way to
Connor Berry in the sixth inning and Bowers in the seventh.
Moreno was 3-for-4 at the dish in game two and Gibert was a perfect 3-for-3. Moreno drove in three runs in the game, as did Meredith and
Evan Robinson. Both players collected a pair of hits, while the rest of the team combined for 17 hits in the contest.
UTPB's Hector Arellano (L, 0-2) was saddled with the loss in game two after giving up seven runs on 10 hits in 3.2 innings of work.
The Texans will close out the road trip with a single game against Colorado School of Mines on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Odessa.
