HOUSTON, Texas – Tarleton State's
Colten Boothe and
Alvaro Moreno picked up right where they left off last season as the duo combined to tally six hits and drive in seven runs in the Texan's 16-3 win over Winona State Monday afternoon at the Houston Winter Invitational that is being held at Minute Maid Park.
The Texans open the 2014 campaign at 1-0, while the Warriors fell to 1-2 after dropping its last two contests played in Houston.
Tarleton's entire lineup combined for 18 hits in just the first game of the season, marking the most hits for a Texan team since tallying 18 hits last season against Arlington Baptist back on Feb. 23.
Boothe and Moreno had a great day at the dish as they both recorded a game-high three hits apiece. Boothe led the squad with four runs batted in and Moreno followed with his three RBI on the day. Boothe and
Kevin Meredith scored a game-high three runs each as well.
Troyal Yosko (ND) got the start for the Texans as he allowed just one run on three hits in his three full innings of work. He then gave way to
Garrett Kelly(W, 1-0), who despite giving up a pair of runs in his two innings of duty, picked up the win for the Texans.
Ty Galloway and
Matt Herrick worked the final two innings for the Texans, and neither pitcher allowed a hit in their respective mound appearances. Herrick made quick work of the Warriors as he managed to strikeout the side on two swinging strikes and another batter caught looking.
The Warriors managed to get on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Texans came right back with an eight-spot in the top of the second inning, forcing WSU starting pitcher Jay Voter (L, 0-1) out of the game after recording just one out in the frame.
Tarleton's first seven batters reach base on six hits and a walk in the top of the second inning before the first out was recorded. After yielding a double, a walk and then a wild pitch, WSU finally changed pitchers as Brady Schroeder came on in relief.
The Texans added to its lead in the top of the third inning with RBI-hits from Boothe and
Jonathan Schmitz, then put up four more runs in the top of fourth inning to put the game out of reach.
The Warriors managed to scrape home two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and after not scoring in the fifth and sixth innings, Tarleton drove in a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to make it a 16-3 game.
Herrick struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh inning and the game was then called due to the run-rule.
Voter took the loss for WSU and after Schroeder's appearance, WSU brought in Lucas Warren for an inning and a third before giving the ball to Hayden Krimmer for the final two innings.
Michael Hommes and Brett Young led the Warriors at the plate with both players collecting two hits each on the day. Hommes led the team with a pair of RBI and two runs scored as well.
Of Tarleton's 18 hits on the day, four different players had a double, while Meredith tallied the team's only triple of the day.
