No. 21 Tarleton drops overtime road game at Cameron

Kiara Wright recorded a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds but Tarleton fell in overtime Saturday at Cameron.
Box Score LAWTON, OK – For the second straight game, 40 minutes wasn't enough time for the No. 21 Tarleton TexAnns.

Unlike Wednesday night's overtime thriller, however, Saturday's overtime affair did not go in Tarleton's favor as the TexAnns struggled to score in the extra period and fell to Cameron for the second time this season 76-72 in overtime.

Tarleton dominated the game early on – starting the game on a 6-0 run and eventually stretching the lead to seven at 11-4 in the first 3:08.

The Aggies would respond, though, with a 9-3 push of their own to bring the game within one at 14-13. From that point on, neither team was able to pull away as the teams traded the lead and the score was tied 10 times over the remainder of the first half with Tarleton holding a slim 38-37 advantage at the break.

Like Tarleton in the opening half, Cameron got off to a hot start inside the fresh 20 – opening the second half with a 13-3 run to take a nine-point lead, the largest of either team at that point.

Trailing by nine with 11:07 left, Karli Moore hit a layup to start a 10-0 TexAnn run to give the lead back to Tarleton with 7:15 left in regulation. Cameron struck right back with seven unanswered to retake the lead, which they would hold until the 2:02 mark.

Kiara Wright gave Tarleton the lead again in the final two minutes of regulation with a layup to make the score 63-62. After Cameron answered with a bucket, Wright struck again with an old-fashioned 3-point play to put the TexAnns up two with 30 seconds left.

The Aggies got a layup with 28 seconds left to tie the score at 66-66 and give Tarleton one final shot in regulation. The TexAnns got a 3-point look but could not convert, sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, Tarleton took a 72-71 lead with 1:28 left but the Aggies ended the game with five unanswered points to secure the win.

Tarleton shot 39 percent from the field for the game, including just 25 percent on 2-8 shooting in overtime. The TexAnns were also 29 percent from downtown and 58 percent from the free throw line, including 1-6 shooting at the line in overtime.

Wright led the team with 25 points and 12 rebounds while Meagan O'Dell poured in a career-high 15 points off the bench. Brianna Bledsoe added 12 as the only other double-figure scorer for Tarleton. Kathy Thomas (6), Raven McGrath (3), Shanae Lowrance (5), Moore (2) and Ikpeaku Iwobi (4) rounded out the Tarleton scoring.

Tarleton lost the battle in the paint in both scoring and rebounding – being outscored 34-32 in the paint and outrebounded 50-34.

The TexAnns will stay on the road next Wednesday as they visit Angelo State for a 6 p.m. game in the Junell Center.
