Texan Baseball Preview: West Texas A&M

STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton State Texans (15-7, 6-4 LSC) will host the Lone Star Conference-leading and No. 4/6-ranked West Texas A&M Buffs (21-4, 10-2) in a four-game series this weekend at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex in Stephenville.
 
The crucial four-game set will begin with a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. and followed by Saturday's doubleheader that is set to start at 1 p.m. The Texans and Buffs will then close out the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
The Tarleton Athletics Department will be hosting a hot dog cookout before Saturday doubleheader, and is inviting all Tarleton students and fans to come out in support of the Texan Baseball team.
 
The Texans are coming off series with the Cameron Aggies that was cut short due to bad weather last weekend. Tarleton won the first two games of the series and will make the two remaining games up at a later date.
 
Tarleton is currently in second place in the conference standing, just three games behind WT, who is coming off a four-game sweep over Angelo State and has won five straight games heading into the weekend.
 
The Texans currently lead the LSC in hitting with a combined team batting average of .323, with 43 doubles, seven triples and a league-high 14 home runs. Tarleton has scored 142 runs on the season as well.
 
The Tarleton pitching staff heads into the weekend ranked fourth in the league with a combined 3.90 earned run average. The Texans have given up 76 earned runs in 175.1 innings and the team leads the LSC with six saves on the season.
 
Jared Musgrove leads both the Texans in hitting with a .467 batting average, while teammate Rustin Thomas is right behind him hitting .414 on the season. Thomas' average leads all LSC hitters that qualify and his five home runs tops the league as well.
 
Noel Nevarez, who is coming off a weekend where he belted two home runs, is third in the LSC with 17 runs batted in, while both Thomas and Kevin Meredith are behind him in fourth with 16 RBI. Luke Slentz heads into the weekend leading the Texans and the LSC with a .519 on base percentage.
 
Jacob French is the co-LSC leader with five wins on the season. French is 5-1 with a 3.60 ERA and a team-best 33 K's on the year. Colton Burleson (3-2) leads all starters with a 2.57 ERA. Ethan Lenz leads the LSC with six saves in 11 appearances this season.
 
WT comes into Stephenville hitting .305 on the year, which ranks third in the LSC. WT leads the league with 47 doubles and 11 triples, but has just four home runs on the year.
 
The Buff pitching staff has an LSC-best 2.05 ERA after giving up a league-low 48 earned runs in its 210.1 innings of work this season.
 
Tyler McKnight leads WT and ranks third in the LSC with a .403 batting average, while Nick Chapman is behind him with a .400 average. Chapman leads the LSC with 38 hits so far this season.
 
WT's Joshua Weyker ranks third in the LSC with a 1.15 ERA, while teammate Dylan James has a league-high 56 strikeouts. James is 5-0 on the season and is tied with Tarleton's French for the league lead in wins.
 
Tarleton took three our of four games from the Buffs in the regular-season last year and then ended WT's season in the LSC Championship Tournament with a 6-3 win in Canyon. Tarleton has won three straight and is 7-5 against WT over the past three seasons.
