ALLEN – The No. 5-ranked Tarleton State Texans scored 49 first-half points on the way to an 89-70 victory over West Texas A&M in the first round of play at the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament at Allen Event Center in Allen on Wednesday.
With the win, Tarleton moved to 25-2 overall and will move on to play the winner of A&M-Commerce and Eastern New Mexico, which will be played Thursday evening. The Buffs end their season with a six-game losing streak and moved to a final record of 10-17 in 2013-14.
Tarleton has defeated the Buffs in four-straight games dating back to last season and six of the past seven since 2012. The Texans moved to 22-23 all-time against the Buffs too, just one win shy now from tying the all-time series.
Tarleton moved to 5-2 all-time when facing the Buffs in the LSC Championship and 13-3 all-time in the first round of play.
After trailing 16-12 early in the first half, Tarleton went on a 16-9 run to take a 28-21 lead and then closed out the period with an 11-4 run to take a commanding 12-point lead into the break.
The Texans shot 57.7 percent from the field, which included going 5-for-8 (.625) from beyond the three-point line over the course of the first 20 minutes.
Tashawn Mabry led all players at the break with 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting, and both De'Andre Upchruch (11) and
Chuck Guy (12) poured in double-digit efforts in the first half as well.
Tarleton committed just two turnovers in the first half and managed to score 12 points off seven of WT's miscues. The Buffs out-rebounded the Texans 19 to 13 and scored eight second-chance points, but Tarleton's bench tallied 22 points to WT's nine-point effort.
The Texans opened the second half with an 11-6 run and Tarleton's depth was just too much for WT's depleted bench over the final 20 minutes of play.
Mabry finished the game leading all players in scoring as he registered a career-high 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting. He was 3-for-5 from the three-point line and managed to pour in three points from the charity stripe as well.
Upchurch finished with 22 points and Guy tallied 16 points with a game-high seven assists.
Tarleton shot 52.7 percent from the field, eclipsing 50 percent mark for the 14th time this season.
The Texans will have Thursday off to scout the Lions-Greyhounds game and will then prepare for its next game, which will be at 8:30 on Friday.
