Box Score ALLEN – Tarleton State got double-double efforts from seniors
Kiara Wright and
Brianna Bledsoe as the No. 2-seeded TexAnns ended Texas A&M-Commerce's season by dismantling the Lions from the opening tip-off in the LSC Championship opener.
Tarleton State started the game on a 12-0 run and never looked back en route to a 84-55 victory over the Lions in the LSC Tournament opener.
Wright got the TexAnns on the board 20 seconds into the game and kick-started the 12-0 run to begin the game. Of the opening 12 points, Wright scored 10 of them while
Shanae Lowrance drained a jumper for the other two.
"I'm going to try to remember that first half for as long as I can. I just tried to sit back and enjoy it," said Tarleton head coach Ronnie Hearne. "You have to give the players a lot of credit. They were prepared mentally and really wanted to come to this tournament and show people what kind of team we really are."
In the opening half, Tarleton extended that 12-0 lead to as much as a 31-point lead in the waning seconds of the half as they led by a score of 50-19 with 34 seconds left and went into the break with a 50-21 advantage.
Tarleton outshot Commerce 63 percent to 29 percent, forced 14 Lion turnovers and had double-figure scoring efforts from Wright (14) and Lowrance (13) in the first 20 minutes of game time. Wright's 14 in the first half were as many as the Lion's leading scorer finished with for the entire game.
The teams played the second half to an even 34-34 slate but the massive lead proved too much for Commerce to overcome.
"We knew we were going to have to come out hard and be extremely focused, especially after what happened in Commerce," said senior guard
Brianna Bledsoe. "We knew we would have to take it to them and do whatever it took to get the win."
This game was a rematch of Saturday's regular season finale when Commerce topped Tarleton 74-69 in Commerce. In that game, the Lions led for the entire game, but in Wednesday's rematch, Tarleton never trailed and led by double figures for 37:01 of the total 40 minutes.
For the game, Wright and Bledsoe ended with double-doubles. Wright scored 18 and grabbed 13 rebounds for her 57
th career double-double while Bledsoe scored 13 and grabbed 10 boards in the third double-double of her career.
Lowrance (13) and Kathy Thomas (12) also cracked double-figures out of the TexAnn starting five while Ikepaku Iwobi scored 11 off the bench.
Raven McGrath (7),
Travanti Downes (6)
Meagan O'Dell (2) and
Keyra Johnson (2) rounded out the Tarleton scoring.
Tarleton outshot the Lions 58 percent to 33 percent from the field for the game and the TexAnns held the Lions without a 3-pointer, forcing Commerce to an 0-7 mark from downtown.
The TexAnns will compete in the LSC Championship Tournament semifinals for the third consecutive season Friday at noon against the winner of Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
