Box Score 2 STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton State Texans closed out its three-game set against Angelo State with a sweep over the Rams at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex in Stephenville on Saturday.
Tarleton downed ASU 8-0 in game one before
Luke Slentz gave the Texans a 10-9 walk-off win in game two.
The Texans were ahead 8-5 in the top of the ninth inning in game two, but ASU managed to bring in a pair of runs before Reggie Rodriguez stole home to tie the game 9-9. Tarleton catcher
Jonathan Schmitz requested timeout to go out and talk to his pitcher, but the home plate umpire did not grant the timeout and Rodriguez raced home to score.
Following the stolen base, ASU's J.P. Zapata tripled and drove in the go-ahead run that gave ASU a 9-8 lead. Ethen Lenz, who came into the game in the top of the ninth inning, managed to get record the final out and get out of the inning and send the Texan offense back up to the plate.
Noel Nevarez, who homered earlier in the game, led off the inning and blasted his second home run of the game – his sixth of the season – to tie the game 9-all. Schmitz then doubled down the leftfield line and Jake Klauk moved him over to third with a successful bunt. Slentz then gave the Texans the walk-off win with his single to left field as Schmitz came home to score the winning run.
With the pair of wins Tarleton moved to 21-16 overall and 11-13 in Lone Star Conference play, while also sweeping the series from the Rams for the first time in school history. The Rams fell to 23-18 overall and 12-14 in the LSC – just one game ahead of the Texans for third place in the standings.
Tarleton's
Colton Burleson (W, 4-4) gave up just three hits in his shutout win over the Rams in game one. He struck out six ASU batters and had just one walk while earning the win in his full seven innings of work.
Alvaro Moreno provided Burleson with plenty of offense, going 2-for-5 at the plate, which included hitting a grand slam in Tarleton's six-run sixth inning.
Rustin Thomas and
Jared Musgrove both collected a run batted in each as they were both walked with the bases loaded.
Andrew Jacobi drove in the game's first run and Moreno later put the Texans on top 2-0 with a RBI-single in the fifth inning.
Lenz (W, 1-1) would get the win in game two, despite blowing his second save opportunity of the season. The junior yielded four runs on four hits, but did get a strikeout in his one inning of work.
Kyle Gottardy (ND), who started for the Texans in game two, gave up five runs on 10 hits in his four innings of work before giving way to
Garrett Kelly, who did not allow a run and just three hits in his four innings of duty.
The Texans will take a break form LSC play on Tuesday, April 15, as the team travels to San Antonio to face St. Mary's in a crucial South Central Region affair. First pitch between the Texans and Rattlers is set for 6 p.m.
