Texans Fall 8-7 to Rattlers

Box Score SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Rattlers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to record a walk-off win and snap Tarleton State's four-game winning streak, as the Texans fell 8-7 Tuesday evening at Dickson Stadium in San Antonio.

The Texans (21-17) opened the game with Rustin Thomas being hit by a pitch and later scoring on a ground out from Garrett Kilgore, but the Rattlers (28-13) would counter with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take a one-run advantage.

Tarleton again scored in the top half of the second inning on a RBI-sacrifice fly from Jake Klauk to tie the game, but St. Mary's came back with another pair of runs to take a 4-2 lead.

The two teams would trade runs in the third inning before Tarleton posted a three-run spot in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-5 advantage. The Rattlers responded with another run to tie the game before Alvaro Moreno singled home Evan Robinson to give the Texans a one-run lead heading into the final half frame.

Garrett Kelly (L, 3-1), who recorded the final out in the bottom of the eighth inning, would stay on the hump for the Texans, but he would give up a bases-loaded walk to Joe Hermsen and later allowed Brooks Orton to drive in the winning run with a single to right field that gave St. Mary's the 8-7 victory.

Matt Herrick (ND) got the start for the Texans and allowed a pair of runs on four hits, before giving way to Dillon Bowers and Troyal Yosko over the next five innings.

St. Mary's Nathan Humpal (ND) was the starter for the home team, but it was Rene Solis (W, 9-2) who picked up the win for the Rattlers despite just working 2/3 of an inning.

Moreno and Dalton Weeks led the Texans at the plate, collecting a pair of hits each and Kilgore led the squad with two runs batted in on the evening.

The Texans will return to Lone Star Conference play this weekend with a four-game set against the Cameron Aggies. The first game of Friday's doubleheader at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex will begin at 2 p.m.
