Texans Fall to Aggies on Friday

Alvaro Moreon had three hits and one run batted in on Friday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State baseball dropped its series-opening doubleheader with the Cameron Aggies, falling 1-0 in game two and then 5-4 in the nightcap Friday evening at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex in Stephenville.

The Texans fell to 21-19 overall with the two losses and are now 11-15 in Lone Star Conference play, while Cameron improved to 15-23 overall and 9-17 in league play.

Cameron's Tobin Mateychick provided the only run in game one, as his solo homer in the fifth inning gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead and starting pitcher Brian Schwabe (W, 3-3) did the rest as he did not allow a run on just five hits in six full innings of work.

Mateychick (S, 4) came in from his outfield postion for the Aggies with a runner on in the bottom of the seventh inning and recorded all three outs to preserve the win and collect his fourth save on the year.

Robert Baker (L, 5-5) yielded just the one run on two hits and struck out three, but was saddled with the loss despite throwing a complete game for the Texans.

Tarleton's Alvaro Moreno led the team at the plate in game one, collecting a pair of hits in three at bats.

The Texans opened game two with a run in the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead, but Cameron recorded back-to-back one-run innings in the third and fourth to tie the game and then take a one-run lead.

The Aggies would tack on another run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to take a 4-1 advantage before Tarleton made it a one-run game in the eighth inning when Andrew Jacobi scored on an error and Noel Nevarez came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Luke Slentz.

Cameron would score what proved to be the winning run in the top of the ninth inning as the Texans would manage to get just one run home in the bottom half of the frame before Mateychick (S, 5) closed out the game with his second save of the day.

Steve Matta (W, 3-4) yielded just one run on four hits on his way to earning the win, while Matt Herrick (L, 1-1) suffered his first loss of the season after getting the start for the Texans. Ross Wagliardo, Troyal Yosko and Ethan Lenz would all pitch in relief for the Texans in game two.

Nevarez led the squad with a pair of hits in game two, while Moreno, Slentz and Kevin Meredith each drove in a run.

The Texans and Aggies will closeout the series in Stephenville tomorrow, with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The Aggies will be designated as the "home" team in game two, as part of the make-up game from a rain out in Lawton, Okla., earlier this season.
