Box Score 2 STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton State Texans avoided a four-game sweep to the Cameron Aggies, splitting Saturday's doubleheader at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex in Stephenville.
The Texans (22-20, 12-16 LSC) dropped the first game of Saturday's twin bill, 6-2, but then came back to down the Aggies (16-24, 10-18) by the same score, 6-2, in the series finale.
Tarleton opened game one scoring a run in the bottom half of the first inning when
Jared Musgrove doubled and then later scored on a run-scoring double from
Noel Nevarez, but Cameron would later counter with a three-run third inning to take a two-run advantage.
The Aggies had a pair of solo home runs in the inning and
Colton Burleson (L, 4-5) would not come back into the game, suffering the loss for the Texans.
CU added another run in the top of the fourth inning and later drove in a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a five-run lead.
Tarleton would manage to bring in one more run on the day in the bottom of the seventh inning when Musgrove tallied his second double of the day and then scored on a RBI-single by
Alvaro Moreno. Nevarez would single up the middle in the next at bat, but CU's Drew Reidt (W, 5-6) stopped the rally and managed to get the final out of the inning.
Reidt would go all the way for the Aggies to get the win, giving up just the two runs and striking out one.
Rustin Thomas, Musgrove, Moreno and Nevarez all had a pair of hits in the game as the Texans outhit the Aggies for the third straight game, 10-9.
Neither team would score a run until the Texans came up to bat in the top of the sixth inning and the Texans would take a 2-0 lead when Moreno doubled, Thomas walked and
Jonathan Schmitz drove both runners home on a double to left-center field that just missed going out of the park.
Tarleton would then add to its lead in the top of seventh inning on Moreno's two-run bomb – his third of the season – to make it a 4-0 game before the Aggies managed to bring home a run in the bottom half of the frame to make it a three-run game still in favor of the Texans.
The Texans tacked on another pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to cushion its lead, but it was more than enough as
Garrett Kelly (S, 2) shut down the Aggies over the final two frames to earn his second save of the season.
Kyle Gotarrdy (W, 3-3) earned his third win of the season after giving up just one run on three hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts.
CU's Ryan Daspin (L, 1-1) took the loss in game two, giving up two runs on three hits. Brent Handy worked just 1/3 of an inning in the seventh inning, but was quickly replaced by Tim Eason after giving up the bomb to Moreno.
The Texans will be back in action next weekend, on the road in Kingsville, to take on the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas in three-game series that will get underway on Friday from Nolan Ryan Field.
