CANYON - With just two weekends left in the 2014 season, the Tarleton State baseball team will begin a pivotal three-game set against No. 16-ranked West Texas A&M this Friday and Saturday at Wilder Park in Canyon.
The Texans (22-20, 12-16 LSC) and Buffs (31-13, 19-10 LSC) will play a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday and will then closeout the series on Saturday with a single game set for 1 p.m.
Heading into this weekend's slate of games, Tarleton is currently 1.5 games ahead of Eastern New Mexico and 2.0 games ahead of Cameron for fourth place in the Lone Star Conference standings. The Texans trail Angelo State by 1.5 games for third place. The top four teams at the end of the regular season will earn a trip to the conference tournament.
Tarleton is coming off a 1-3 weekend against the Aggies in Stephenville last weekend, while the Buffs are coming off a 20-19 loss to Wayland Baptist on Tuesday. The Buffs dropped two of three from the Rams in San Angelo last weekend as well and head into the weekend having lost four of its last six games.
The Buffs are 16-5 on the season when playing inside Wilder Park, while Tarleton brings in an overall record of 7-10 when playing away from Stephenville.
Jared Musgrove heads into the weekend leading both the Texans and the league in hitting with a .400 batting average. He has tallied 36 hits with six doubles and a pair of triples to go along with 16 runs batted in and 23 runs scored.
Alvaro Moreno follows hitting .357 on the season with eight doubles and three home runs. Moreno leads the Texans with 29 RBI on the season.
The Texans come in hitting .286 as a team with 75 doubles, eight triples and 21 home runs.
Ross Wagliardo leads the Texans with a 2.25 earned run average in six appearances on the year.
Garrett Kelly leads the team with a 2.43 ERA in players that have appeared in more than 25 innings.
Robert Baker leads all Texan pitchers with 43 strikeouts on the year.
The Texans will return home next weekend to face Texas A&M-Kingsville. Hall of Fame weekend is scheduled on campus and senior day is scheduled to take place before first pitch of Saturday's contests.
