Box Score CANYON – The Tarleton State Texans came away with a pair of wins over the No. 16-ranked West Texas A&M Buffs this weekend following Saturday's 16-4 route and are now in third place in the Lone Star Conference standings heading into the final weekend of games.
The Texans, who moved to 24-21 overall and 14-17 with the 12-run route over the Buffs, are now a half game ahead of Angelo State for third place and 1.5 games ahead of Eastern New Mexico following this weekend's games.
The Texans put up a pair of two-run innings before a seven-run fourth inning put the visiting team up for good. WT would manage to score a pair of runs in the seventh inning, but
Garrett Kelly managed to get the final outs of the frame and end the game in a run-rule for the Texans.
Kyle Gottardy (W, 4-3) got the start for the Texans and he gave up just a pair of runs on seven hits while striking out three WT batters in the game. WT's Joshua Walker (L, 7-5) was saddled with the loss after giving up 11 runs on 13 hits in just 3.1 innings of work.
Garrett Kilgore tallied a team-high four hits in the game while
Rustin Thomas,
Dalton Weeks and
Luke Slentz each recorded three hits in the contest. Thomas and Weeks both homered for the Texans, while Kilgore managed to register three doubles at the plate.
The Texans will head into the final three games of the season with a home series against the league-leading Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas, with the first game of the series to be played on Friday.
