Texan Baseball Splits Regular Season Finale with Javelinas

Luke Slentz had four hits in Tarleton's final two games of the regular season on Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton State Texans won game one of Saturday's doubleheader 4-3 before falling 10-8 in the regular season finale at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex in Stephenville.
 
The Javelinas managed to bring home the game's first run in game one, but the Texans would respond with a pair of runs in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Garrett Kilgore walked to lead off the inning and he would later score on a RBI-single from Evan Robinson. Luke Slentz, who reached base earlier on a walk, would give Tarleton the one-run advantage when he came home to score on a sacrifice fly from Alvaro Moreno.
 
TAMUK's Travis Laird led off the third inning with a solo home run to tie the game at 2-2, but in the bottom of the fifth inning, Tarleton's Noel Nevarez put the Texans on top 4-2 with his two-run double down the left field line.
 
The Javelinas would tack on a run in the top of the seventh inning, but Robert Baker (W, 6-6) worked his way out of the inning to secure the win for the Texans.
 
Baker earned his sixth victory of the season after giving up just the three runs on five hits and striking out four batters on the day. Baker recorded his sixth complete game of the season in the win.
 
TAMUK's Denver Diefenbach (L, 9-3) was saddled with the loss in game one, giving up all four runs on five hits in his 4 1/3 innings of work.
 
Luke Slentz led the Texans at the dish in game one, going 2-for-2 and the senior second baseman scored a run as well.
 
The Texans jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after putting up a five-spot in the first inning and then later extended their lead to 7-3 on a two-run home run from Rustin Thomas in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
The Javelinas would score a run in the top of the fifth inning to pull within three runs, but then later took the lead after scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning, which made it an 8-7 game in favor of TAMUK.
 
TAMUK tacked on another pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning and despite Tarleton's effort to rally in the bottom of the ninth, the Javelinas would end the game with the two-run victory.
 
Troyal Yosko (L, 2-3) would take the loss for the Texans in a relief appearance of Kyle Gottardy, while TAMUK's Ryan Benitez (W, 4-1) picked up the win in a relief effort as well. Hayden James (S, 1) earned his first save of the season for the Javelinas, giving up just one run on three hits in two full innings of work.
 
Noel Nevarez, Jonathan Schmitz, Slentz and Kevin Meredith led the Texans with two hits each in game two.
 
The Texans closeout the regular season with an overall record of 26-22 and 16-18 in Lone Star Conference play. Tarleton completes LSC play in third place and will earn the No. 3 seed in next week's LSC Championship Tournament.
 
The Javelinas finished the regular season with an overall mark of 34-16 and were named the league's regular-season champions with an overall LSC record of 24-11. TAMUK earns the right to host the LSC Championship, which is set to get underway next Thursday, May 8 at Nolan Ryan Field.
 
The Texans will play No. 2-seeded West Texas A&M in the first game of the championship, which is set to begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
