No. 12 Texans shoot lights out from deep on ‘Black Out Night’ in Wisdom

STEPHENVILLE – No. 12 Tarleton rained 3-pointers in a near-record setting performance to run away with an 89-42 win over McMurry Wednesday night in Wisdom Gym.

Tarleton shot a season-high 32 shots from beyond the arc, compared to just 30 shots inside the triple line, while draining 16 of them for a 50-percent effort. The 16 made long balls which is one short of the school record of 17 on January 20, 1996 against Central Oklahoma.

McMurry took the lead after the first 33 seconds at 2-1 before Mo Lee drained the first triple to start the Tarleton rout.

The Lee triple was the first of 11 straight points for the Texans as they built an 11-2 lead over the first four minutes with TaShawn Mabry capping the run with a 3-ball of his own. The Warhawks pulled back within five points before Lee knocked down another 3-pointer to push the lead back to 16-8 and start a 13-2 run to push the lead to 16 with 9:31 left in the opening half.

Tarleton State continued to build on its lead and pushed the lead to a half-high 21 point lead entering the break.

Just as he did in the first half, Reed got Tarleton on the board right away in the new half with a tip-in to start a 28-12 Texan run to bury the Warhawks in a 71-34 hole with 9:28 left in the game. The Texans continued to pour it on and stretched the lead to as many as 48 at 89-41 before a McMurry free throw brought the game to its final score.

Tarleton State got double-figure scoring efforts from five different Texans, including 21 from Lee who shot 8-11 from the floor and 5-7 from downtown. Reed poured in a season-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.

Nosa Ebomwonyi matched his career high with 14 points while Mabry and Malcolm Hamilton each scored 13. Davene Carter slammed home three dunks for his six points while Jacob Morales and Deshawn Riddick each had two to round out the scoring for Tarleton.

The Texans dominated the boards 40-23 while outscoring the Warhawks 32-16 in the paint and 23-5 on second chance points off a 15-7 advantage on the offensive glass.

Tarleton State will head to Commerce for a Saturday evening matchup of nationally-ranked, conference foes when the No. 12 Texans and No. 25 Lions tip off at 6 p.m. from the Field House.
