Second-half defense dominant as Tarleton routs McMurry

STEPHENVILLE – After a tight contest over the first 28:10, Tarleton State put McMurry away with a dominant second-half run that saw the TexAnns outscore the Warhawks 31-6 en route to a 64-37 win at Wisdom Gym Wednesday night.

Over Tarleton's game-clinching run, the TexAnns held McMurry without a field goal as all six Warhawk points came on six free throws.

McMurry jumped out to a quick lead with a 7-2 run over the first 3:56 before a 3-ball from Bailey Wipff – who scored eight of Tarleton's first 10 points – pulled the TexAnns back within a basket and started an 18-6 run to put Tarleton on top 20-13 with 7:51 left in the opening half.

Over the rest of the half, the Warhawks stayed in the game by pulling the score even at 20-20 before a Breanna Fuller tip-in started a 7-2 TexAnn run over the rest of the half to send the TexAnns into the break with a 27-22 advantage.

After McMurry pulled within one just three minutes into the fresh half, Raven McGrath drilled a 3-ball of her own for the first of six straight Tarleton points to extend the lead back to seven with 14:18 left in the game. McMurry answered with one final run to pull within two points for the final time at 33-31.

The bucket that pulled the game to 33-31 was the final shot Tarleton State would surrender from the floor over the rest of the game as the offense also kicked into gear, beginning with an Ikpeaku Iwobi jumper to start the game-ending run.

Tarleton State got scoring from nine different TexAnns over the final 11:50, including the first career points for Nyariak Duop on a corner 3-ball for Tarleton's final points.

As a team, Tarleton shot 35 percent from the floor and 35 percent from downtown while holding the Warhawks to 25 percent from the floor and 18 percent from downtown. The TexAnns also dominated the battle of the boards 54-29 leading to a 21-0 scoring difference on second chance points after winning the offensive rebounds 20-6.

Tarleton got a near double-double effort from Breanna Fuller with 11 points and eight rebounds off the bench while Wipff finished with 11 points for her third straight double-figure scoring performance. In all, 13 TexAnns recorded points including Kathy Thomas (8), Raven McGrath (5), Karli Moore (5), Averie Mack (5), Morgan Ashmore (5), Iwobi (4), Duop (3), Tiara Tatum (2), DeAndra Wheeler (2), Brooklyn Garcia (2) and Haley Trentham (1).

In addition to Fuller's eight boards, Iwobi also pulled down eight rebounds while Travanti Downes grabbed a career-high seven.

The TexAnns will have an action-packed weekend as they travel to Texas A&M-Commerce for a 4 p.m. game Saturday before turning around for a 2 p.m. game in Wisdom Gym against Texas Woman's Sunday.
