KINGSVILLE – Tarleton ran their winning streak to a season-high six games with a convincing 3-1 win on the road against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
With the win, Tarleton improves to 14-3 overall and 4-1 in the Lone Star Conference. The TexAnns are a half game behind Texas Woman's (5-1) for first in conference.
Tarleton led 6-1 in the opening set behind a pair of kills from
Hailey Roberts and four attack errors by Kingsville. The TexAnns maintained a lead for the majority of the opening set before Kingsville tied the score at 22 and eventually took the set 24-26.
The TexAnns bounced back in the second set and went on an early 7-1 that was highlighted by kills from
Meg Umbel,
Macie Walker and two aces by
Hailey Roberts to take a 9-4 lead.
Kingsville tied the score at 21 but
Kenya Alexander followed with the go-ahead kill that started a 4-1 run to close out the set at 25-22 and tie the match at one.
The Javelinas took an early 3-5 lead in the third set when Umbel's kill shifted the momentum and started a 5-0 run that gave Tarleton an 8-5 advantage. Kills from
Kelsey Raglin and
Xzache Mathis gave Tarleton its biggest lead of the set at 23-14 and Alexander put the finishing touches on the third-set win with a pair of kills set by Walker to win 25-20.
Determined to put the game away, Tarleton quickly went ahead 4-0 on a pair of aces by
Adrianna Knutson.
Abby Mackey followed with a pair of kills and an ace for a 9-4 lead.
Kingsville battled to make it a 12-11 game, but two more kills from Mackey and Umbel's block pushed the lead back to 17-12. Umbel wasn't done there, as the senior had another block and two kills for a 22-15 lead.
Raglin, Mathis and Alexander put the exclamation point to a conference road win with three straight kills to win the fourth set 25-20.
Tarleton has won seven straight against the Javelinas and 11 of the last 12.
Kenya Alexander led the TexAnns in kills for the first time this season with 13 while also adding three blocks.
Kelsey Raglin had nine kills, 12 digs and four blocks while
Meg Umbel also had nine kills and a team-high seven blocks.
Hailey Roberts gave the TexAnns 11 kills and nine digs.
Macie Walker led the team in assists with 34.
Adrianna Knutson was one of three TexAnns with double-digit digs, as the freshman had 12 to go with a game-high three aces.
Ayssa Garcia led the team in digs with 16 and
Xzache Mathis added eight kills.
Tarleton returns to Wisdom Gym to start a four-game conference home stand starting with Cameron on Oct. 9 at 6 p.m.
