TexAnns clinch a share of first LSC title with one game to go

Tarleton tied a school record with 24 wins

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The record-setting season for the TexAnns continues as Tarleton defeated Midwestern State 3-0 on Friday to tie a school record for wins in a season and clinched at least a share of the Lone Star Conference title for the first time in program history.

The TexAnns (24-5, 14-1 in the LSC) matched last season's win total when they went 24-8. Tarleton, the No. 2-ranked team in the South Central region, also stretched its conference winning streak to 14 straight games.

With a one-game lead over Angelo State, the TexAnns can become the outright Lone Star Conference Champions for the first time in school history with a win at Cameron on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Sophomore Hailey Roberts had a match-high 19 kills and 13 digs, giving her 1,136 career kills to move past Stacie Murrah for sixth on the all-time list.

Xzache Mathis recorded her eighth straight double-digit kills game with 10 on Friday.

Chandler Gow assisted on 39 of the 45 kills for Tarleton, giving the sophomore 1,216 assists this season, ranking second on the all-time single season list.

Defensively, four players had double-digit digs with Ayssa Garcia leading the way with 19. Adrianna Knutson had 16 digs and Kelsey Raglin had 13 to match Roberts. Kenya Alexnder had eight kills and a game-high six blocks.

Although Midwestern State is 0-15 in the LSC, they gave the TexAnns a tough test early in the first two sets.

The opening set featured nine ties and five lead changes with the Mustangs jumping out to a 9-3 lead. Tarleton battled back for its first lead of the set at 18-17 on a kill from Roberts. The two teams would swap points until Tarleton faced a set-clinching point at 26-25 from another Roberts kill and won the set 27-25 with Meg Umbel and Roberts' block.

Tarleton had another come-from-behind victory in the second set that started by trailing 4-8 before tying the score at 9-all. The TexAnns didn't regain the lead until 21-20 and pulled off a 26-24 win with Raglin and Roberts delivering back-to-back kills. The TexAnns held the Mustangs to a match-low .056 hitting percentage in the set win.

Tarleton closed the door on the sweep in the third set after holding a slim 12-10 lead and following with a 6-1 run to pull ahead. The Mustangs made it a four-point game at 22-18, but kills from Roberts and Umbel sealed the third set and the match at 25-18.
