Charles Hill each scored 14 points in Tarleton's unofficial first contest of the 2015-16 season.
The Longhorns started the game on an 11-0 run before Reed put the Texans on the board with a layup at the 14:28 mark. Tarleton made it a nine-point game on an alley-oop dunk by
Malcolm Hamilton from
Deshawn Riddick with 6:32 left in the first half, but the Longhorns padded its lead to 49-28 at the half.
Tarleton shot 9-of-29 in the first half and 2-of-11 from behind the 3-point line compared to UT's 12-of-31 shooting, but the Longhorns made seven of their 12 3-pointers in the first half.
The Texans only turned the ball over 16 times in the game and handled the full-court pressure of Shaka Smart's defense well throughout the contest.
The Longhorns' size advantage played a factor against an under-sized Texans team. UT out-rebounded Tarleton 47-32 in the game.
In the second half, the Longhorns only outscored Tarleton 46-33 and got to the free-throw line 16 times while making 12.
It's the third all-time meeting between Tarleton and Texas, the first since 2004, with the Longhorns winning all three exhibition games.
Tarleton had eight players score in the game, with Hamilton (11 points, five rebounds) and
Michael Hardge (10 points, six rebounds) giving the Texans four players in double figures.
Deshawn Riddick added five points,
Chantz Chambers had three, while
Jakob Damstra and
Nosa Ebomwonyi scored two points.
Tarleton will open the regular season at home for the Texan Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. against Colorado-Colorado Springs.
