No. 7 Tarleton falls to Drury in final seconds in Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – No. 7 Tarleton fell to Drury 68-67 in the final game of the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic to snap a 5-game winning streak.

After starting the game on a 7-0 run, the Texans went on a three-minute scoring drought and faced a 12-point deficit with 3:56 left in the first half. The Texans shot 43 percent in the first half, but Drury was red-hot from the floor and shot 57 percent in the first 20 minutes. Kameron Bundy was a large part of the Panthers' hot start, scoring 20 first-half points.

The Texans' defense tightened up in the second half and got them back in the game. Tarleton went on a 5-0 run and Malcolm Hamilton's three-pointer made it a 47-43 game with 11 minutes left.

Hamilton's layup and Deshawn Riddick's three-pointer gave Tarleton the lead at 54-52 with 7:28 left. It was Tarleton's first lead since 13-10 in the first half.

Tarleton took a five-point lead at 69-54 with 5:23 remaining on another Riddick three-pointer. Riddick finished with nine points and a team-high four assists in 30 minutes off the bench.

Drury climbed back to take a 66-64 lead with 1:10 remaining but Michael Hardge drilled a corner three-pointer with 20 seconds left for a 67-66 advantage. Hardge had 12 points for the Texans.

The Panthers drew a foul in the paint with five seconds left and converted on both free-throw opportunities to take a one-point lead and hold on for the win after Tarleton turned the ball over on its final possession.

EJ Reed and Charles Hill each scored 15 points and Reed added 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Reed and Hill were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

Xavier Smith pulled down eight rebounds and scored four points and matched his career high with four blocks.

Tarleton missed 13 free throws in the game (19-32) and shot 44 percent from the floor. It was the first loss for Tarleton in the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic after winning its first five games over the last three seasons.

Tarleton will return home to take on Southeastern Oklahoma State on Thursday, Dec. 31 at 4 p.m.
