STEPHENVILLE – A 3-pointer by
Meagan O'Dell with three minutes left in the opening half sparked a Tarleton State run that turned a tight battle into a 68-46 blowout of Angelo State in Wisdom Gym Wednesday night.
For the TexAnns, this win snapped a two-game skid – marking the second time Tarleton snapped a two-game conference skid with a blowout after beating Eastern New Mexico by 15 earlier this season to snap a slide.
The teams opened the game in a deadlocked battle where neither side was able to take control early.
Bailey Wipff got the first Tarleton bucket of the game to even things at 2-2 and the game stayed even at 13-13 over the opening 11:33 of the game.
Raven McGrath drilled a jumper with 7:18 on the first-half clock to start a run of eight straight points for the TexAnns to build a 21-13 lead with five minutes to go in the opening period. After the Rambelles got five points back, O'Dell connected on her triple to put the TexAnns up by six and turn the tide of the game. Tarleton State would take a 30-22 into halftime.
Out of the break,
Ikpeaku Iwobi got things started with an old-fashioned 3-point play to give the TexAnns their first double-figure lead of the game at 33-22.
From there, Angelo pulled within single digits on the next possession but that would be as close as the TexAnns would allow as
Karli Moore hit a layup to start a 20-8 Tarleton run over the next six minutes to extend the lead to 21 at 53-32.
The TexAnns went into cruise control over the final 10 minutes, never leading by less than 19 or more than 23 en route to their 13
th win of the season.
For the TexAnns, 13 different players recorded points led by
Kathy Thomas with a team-high 12 points. O'Dell scored nine off the bench while Moore chipped in eight points.
Travanti Downes (6), Iwobi (5), Wipff (5), McGrath (4),
Brooklyn Garcia (4),
Tiara Tatum (4),
Averie Mack (4),
Breanna Fuller (4),
DeAndra Wheeler (2) and
Nyariak Duop (1) rounded out the scoring for Tarleton.
The TexAnns also won the battle of the boards 39-26, including 17-11 on the offensive end that led to 12 second-chance points. Tarleton State also outscored the Rambelles 34-20 in the paint and 34-10 off the bench.
With the win,
Misty Wilson is now one win away from tying Ronnie Hearne for the most wins in a season by a Tarleton rookie head coach in the NCAA era.
Wilson and the TexAnns will go for win No. 14 Saturday when Tarleton heads south to Kingsville for a 6 p.m. matchup with the Javelinas at the Steinke Center.
