Lee lifts No. 11 Tarleton to victory at West Texas A&M

CANYON – Mo Lee drilled a go-ahead layup with 14 seconds left to lift the No. 11 Tarleton State Texans past West Texas A&M in Canyon Saturday night.

The win is also the 10th straight for Tarleton, marking the second double-figure winning streak of the season.

Leading by two with less than two minutes to play, the game would come down to the final seconds as the Texans scored four points in the final 15 seconds to secure the win.

The Buffs tied the game at 60-60 to force a Tarleton timeouts with 36.2 seconds on the clock and with the shot clock winding down; Mo Lee executed a crossover to blow by the WT defender for a layup and a 62-60 lead with 14 ticks left on the clock.

The Buffs put up a contested, fade-away 3-ball on the next possession and EJ Reed pulled down the board and was fouled with 3.5 seconds left. The junior from Mesquite knocked down two free throws to seal the game for the Texans.

Mo Lee intercepted a long inbound pass from the Buffs as the final buzzer sounded.

"This was a big win for us," said head coach Lonn Reisman. "It was a hard-fought, tough win over a quality team. I'm very proud of our kids for this one."

West Texas A&M came out to the tune of a 7-0 run to start the game before a 3-ball from Michael Hardge stopped the bleeding and got the Texan offense going. WT pushed the lead right back to six over the next two minutes before Tarleton made its first run of the game.

With the Buffs leading 11-5 at the 13:57 mark, Davene Carter put back on offensive rebound for his first bucket of the game that started  a 6-0 push by the Texans to bring the score back even at 11-11 with 11:51 left in the opening half.

After a pair of Buff 3-pointers, Tarleton got a free throw from Hardge and five straight points from EJ Reed to keep the game tied at 17-17. West Texas A&M took the lead on its next possession and held it through the rest of the half, despite Tarleton cutting the lead down to two with 54 seconds left. The Texans went into half time down 28-24.

Out of the break, Nosa Ebomwonyi ignited the Texan offense with a triple to open the Tarleton scoring and start a 15-4 run over the first 4:18 of the new half to put the Purple and White up 39-32. Over that run, Mo Lee accounted for seven points while Mabry scored five and Ebomwonyi had his 3-ball.

The Texans extend the lead to as many as eight at 41-33 with 14:43 left in the game before West Texas A&M went on a slim 23-17 run over the next 12 minutes to send the Texans into the final two minutes with a 58-56 lead.

Lee finished the game with 23 points, including a 15-18 performance from the charity stripe and the go-ahead bucket in the waning seconds.

"I like a guy who wants the ball in his hands with the game on the line," said Reisman. "And Mo Lee wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line."

Reed scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds while Michael Hardge added nine and TaShawn Mabry scored seven. Damion Clemons (4), Ebomwonyi (3), Malcolm Hamitlon (2) and Carter (2) rounded out the Tarleton scoring. As a team, Tarleton shot 41 percent from the floor.

Tarleton will return home Saturday night for a 7 p.m. showdown with Eastern New Mexico in Wisdom Gym.
