No. 7 Texans blast McMurry behind four double-digit scorers

ABILENE – No. 7 Tarleton State got four double-figure scoring efforts, led by 19 from EJ Reed, to cruise past McMurry in blowout fashion 88-58 Wednesday night at Kimbrell Arena.

The win marks the third time Tarleton State has reached the 25-win plateau in the regular season in Lonn Reisman's 27-year tenure at the helm of the Texans.

Nosa Ebomwonyi got the Texans on the board first with a game-opening layup but then the teams battled back and forth over the next five minutes with neither team leading by more than one possession.

With Tarleton on top 11-10 at the 14:54 mark, Malcolm Hamilton got the offense rolling with his first 3-pointer of the game to start a 14-5 run for the Texans that extended the lead to double figures for the first time at 25-15 with 9:39 left in the opening half.

McMurry cut the Tarleton lead to seven over the next five minutes, but Ebomwonyi sparked the Texans with a triple off a pass from Mo Lee to push the lead back to double figures and start the game-changing 10-0 run. The Ebomwonyi 3-ball was the first of 10 unanswered points that gave Tarleton a 41-24 lead with 15 seconds left. After a McMurry 3-ball, Tarleton went into halftime with a 41-27 advantage.

Tarleton State came out of the break on fire as Hardge opened up the fresh half with a jumper before EJ Reed drilled a long ball to cap off a 5-0 start to the new period and put the Texans up 46-27. After a Warhawk bucket, Hamilton connected for another triple to give Tarleton its first 20-point lead of the night at 49-29.

After McMurry pulled to 14 with 13:35 left in the game, another Hamilton 3-ball started a Tarleton run – this one a 31-15 advantage to put the Texans up 30 with 4:12 to go. The Texans pushed the lead to as many as 33 and never less than 28.

Reed led the team with 19 points on 7-7 shooting from the floor, including 1-1 from downtown, and 4-5 from the charity stripe. Lee and Deshawn Riddick, who went 5-6 from beyond the arc after hitting his first five attempts for his career high, each scored 15 points while Hamilton rounded out the double-figure scorers with 14 points.

Ebomwonyi poured in eight points while Michael Hardge added six. Davene Carter (4), Jacob Morales (4), Damion Clemons (2) and Curtis Woods (1) rounded out the Tarleton scoring.

The Texans dominated the glass by outrebounding the Warhawks 41-22 with Hardge grabbing a career-high eight rebounds from the point guard spot. Hamilton grabbed six boards while five different Texans each grabbed four.

Tarleton State will return home Saturday night for the regular season finale against Texas A&M-Commerce at 7 p.m. with the Lone Star Conference Championship title on the line. The Texans will honor their seniors – Clemons, Carter and Lee – prior to tip off.
