ABILENE - Tarleton State got at least seven points from six different TexAnns, including a team-high 14 from
Meagan O'Dell, to power past McMurry 85-62 in the final regular season road game of the season Wednesday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena.
Kathy Thomas got Tarleton on the board first with a deep triple off a pass from
Raven McGrath to get the offense rolling early. The Thomas 3-ball was the first of 10 unanswered points by Tarleton that put the TexAnns up 10-0 over the first 2:18 of the game.
McMurry answered back with nine straight of its own before
Breanna Fuller stopped the bleeding with a layup off a dish from
Morgan Ashmore. The Warhawks would take a slim lead before a McGrath layup ended their only lead time of the game and tied the score for the final time at 15-15.
McGrath followed up her game-tying layup with the go-ahead 3-ball off a pass from
Karli Moore at the 9:48 mark of the first half. McGrath's triple started a 15-5 Tarleton run over the next four minutes to extend the TexAnn lead to double figures for the first time at 30-20.
After the Warhawks pulled within single digits for the final time, four straight free throws and a layup from
Travanti Downes put Tarleton up 36-22 for a half-high 14-point lead with 2:22 left in the opening half. The TexAnns took a 12-point lead into halftime.
Tarleton opened the new half on a 16-6 surge to push its lead to 22 over the first 5:30 and cruised over the remainder of the half – never leading by less than 18 or more than 26 for the rest of the game.
O'Dell led the way by scoring her 14 on 3-5 shooting from the floor, including a 3-4 mark from downtown, and 5-5 at the free throw line. McGrath also cracked double figures with 12 points on 4-6 shooting, 2-2 from downtown and 2-2 at the line.
Fuller added eight points off the bench while
Bailey Wipff,
Karli Moore and
Ikpeaku Iwobi each poured in seven points. Thomas scored six while
Tiara Tatum and
Nyariak Duop each added five. Downes (4),
Averie Mack (4),
Brooklyn Garcia (3),
Haley Trentham (2) and
Morgan Ashmore (1) rounded out the scoring for Tarleton.
As a team, Tarleton was 50 percent from the floor, including 69 percent from downtown on 11-16 shooting, and 71 percent at the charity stripe while holding McMurry to 35 percent from the floor and 16 percent from beyond the arc.
Tarleton will return home for the regular season finale Saturday night at 5 p.m. to host Texas A&M-Commerce on senior night in Wisdom Gym. The two TexAnn seniors –
Kathy Thomas and
Karli Moore – will be recognized prior to the women's tip off.
