THE SERIES: SOUTHERN NAZARENE
Tarleton and the Crimson Storm have a small history that has the TexAnns on top 2-0, dating back only to 2012 when the teams met at the Kingsville Invitational. The TexAnns won the inaugural meeting 9-1 and have since played them just one other time – last season during a last-minute tournament in Stephenville when the TexAnns won the game 8-2.
THE SERIES: NORTHEASTERN STATE
Tarleton and Northeastern State have a more extensive history, dating back to the inaugural meeting in 1998 and extending through 2008 when the Riverhawks were a member of the Lone Star Conference. Tarleton State has won six of 14 meetings all-time with all 14 meetings coming in a neutral site.
THE LION CLASSIC
This will be the first-ever tournament hosted by Texas A&M-Commerce, which is in its inaugural season of softball. The tournament will be a four-team, two-day tournament with all teams guaranteed four games if weather is permitting. Texas A&M-Commerce, the only team Tarleton will not see this weekend, enters the tournament having won the first two games of its history last weekend over St. Edward's.
HOT START AT THE DISH
Tarleton State is coming off a season-opening doubleheader in which the TexAnns posted 26 combined runs – the most over the first two games of a season in school history. In two games against Southwestern Oklahoma, Tarleton hit .453 as a team and posted a slugging percentage of .578.
WELCOME TO COLLEGE
Tarleton's freshmen made a big impact for the TexAnns in their collegiate debuts Monday night against Southwestern Oklahoma.
Delaney Wayland opened the season as the starting shortstop and had two hits and three RBIs in her first series while
Nyka Wood earned the season-opening nod behind the plate and also had two hits and three RBIs. Meanwhile,
Haley Freyman made her career debut from the circle and earned her first career win in game one and her first save in game two.
MATA MOVING UP THE ACTIVE LIST
With a pair of wins on Monday, Tarleton State head coach
Julie Mata officially began the 19th season of her legendary career with two more wins to give her 509 all-time. Mata is tied with Texas Woman's head coach, Genny Stidham, for the 33rd most victories among active Division II coaches.
UP NEXT FOR TARLETON
The TexAnns will return home Monday afternoon for a single game against Northwestern Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. at the Tarleton Softball Complex.
