Texans fall to Henderson State in day three at Minute Maid

HOUSTON – Tarleton State suffered its first setback of the season Saturday morning, as the Texans were shutout by Henderson State 8-0 at Minute Maid Park.

The Reddies got on the board right away with two in the top of the first on a 2-RBI single to center field. They added one more in the second and another in the third to take a 4-0 lead over the Texans after three and dip into the Tarleton bullpen early.

Hunter Houston made his Texan debut in relief, of starter Blain Bagley, and kept the Texans in the game with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. The sophomore right-hander faced 14 batters and allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out three.

Meanwhile, the Tarleton offense had its chances beginning in the fourth inning but couldn't capitalize. The Texans had runners on first and second with one out, but a pickoff at second base and hard lineout to center field halted the rally.

After Henderson State added another run in the top of the seventh, Tarleton State appeared primed to crack the run column when the Texans loaded the bases on singles from Brandon Villeneuve, Jonathan Schmitz and Andrew Jacobi to force Henderson into the bullpen, but a strikeout and flyball to left field ended the rally effort in the seventh.

Tarleton had another chance in the eighth after Alec Humphreys ripped a double down the left field line and advanced to third with one out, but strikeouts hurt Tarleton again as back-to-back K's cost the Texans.

Meanwhile, Henderson State added a two-run homer in the eighth and an RBI single in the ninth to bring the game to its final score.

The Texan offense totaled eight hits in the effort with Humphreys, Villeneuve and Schmitz each accounting for a pair. Jacobi and Landon Merka had the other two base knocks for Tarleton.

Bagley took the loss after throwing the first 2.1 innings allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits and a walk with a strikeout. After Houston's relief effort, Troyal Yosko tossed 1.1 innings allowing one run before Seth Hallmark and John Kresta combined for the final 1.2 innings of work.

Tarleton State will wrap up its season-opening trip to Houston tomorrow night when the Texans square off with No. 17 Arkansas Tech at 6 p.m. from Minute Maid Park.
