Texan baseball drops doubleheader to West Texas A&M

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CANYON – The Tarleton Baseball team fell short in both games of the Saturday doubleheader against West Texas A&M. The Texans dropped to 9-11 overall and 3-7 in the Lone Star Conference, while West Texas A&M improved to 17-10, 9-6. The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
Game 1: West Texas A&M 4, Tarleton 2

The Texans jumped out to an early two-run lead behind Brandon Villeneuve's solo home run to lead off the second inning.

Dalton Weeks followed with a single and got into scoring position for Landon Merka by stealing second. Merka's single to center was the Texans' third straight hit to start the second inning which drove in Weeks for the quick 2-0 lead over the Buffaloes.

Tarleton sent senior Colton Burleson to the mound to open the doubleheader and the Buffaloes were able to scatter four runs off the right-hander in 4.1 innings, giving Burleson his first loss of the season.

Even with the loss, Burleson still has a rotation-best 2.77 ERA in five starts.

West Texas A&M duplicated the Texans' second inning with three hits and two runs of their own, including a pair of extra-base hits by Josh Day and Aaron Blair to each drive in a run.

The Buffaloes added another pair of runs in the fifth behind six hits to put Kyle Tinius in position for the win. Tinius (3-0) tossed 4.1 innings out of the pen for West Texas A&M, giving up only three hits to the Texans and no runs.

Villeneuve doubled to right center for Tarleton in the sixth and Merka worked a walk on a seven-pitch at-bat to put two runs on with two outs but the Texans couldn't capitalize.

Villeneuve finished 2-for-2 to lead the Tarleton offense. Alec Humphreys, Kevin Meredith and Jonathan Schmitz all added singles for the Texans.

Hunter Houston came on in relief for the Texans in the fifth and continued his dominating start to the season. Houston tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of two-hit ball and has thrown 10.2 innings this season without allowing a run in six appearances.

Game 2: West Texas A&M 6, Tarleton 1

Ryan March's three-run triple in the second inning helped cap a six-run, six-hit inning for West Texas A&M and take a commanding lead over Tarleton.

Dalton Weeks continued to get on base for the Texans to help generate a rally with his second-inning single. Weeks stole his second base of the day but was left in scoring position. Weeks is tied with Kevin Meredith with a team-best four stolen bases.

Weeks had two of the Texans' three hits to finish 2-for-3 on the night.

Justin Disbro went the full seven innings for West Texas A&M to register his third win of the season. Disbro gave up three hits and only one run while striking out nine Texans.

Meredith was one of the few Texans to get to Disbro with his leadoff home run to start the fourth. Meredith now has a team-high four homers for Tarleton.

The Tarleton bullpen was called upon in the second inning and three Texans combined to throw 3.2 innings of one-hit ball and didn't give up a run to the Buffaloes after their six run outburst.

Troyla Yosko struck out the only batter he faced, while Blain Bagley did the bulk of the work by throwing three innings and surrendering only one hit. Cole Foster threw a perfect sixth inning and had two strike outs.
