Game 1: Tarleton 7, A&M-Kingsville 3
Â
It was only a matter of time before the Texans' bats came alive. After averaging two runs per game during the seven-game losing streak, Tarleton plated seven runs for the first time since February 20 in the 7-3 win in the doubleheader opener.
Â
Facing a 2-0 deficit in the third inning,
Brandon Villeneuve and
Elijah Christenson opened the bottom of the fourth inning with walks.
Landon Merka came up with Villeneuve and Christenson on at first and second and lined a triple to the center-field wall for a two-run triple. Merka scored on the play after Kingsville's relay throw to third sailed into the Texans' dugout.
Â
Christenson finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored for the Texans.
Â
In the top of the fifth, Kingsville was able to notch the game up at three when Jimmy Roche doubled to right field and scored on Ryan Fickel's single to left.
Â
Evan Robinson's memorable day began with a two-out single to left in the bottom half of the fifth. Villeneuve's double scored Robinson for the go-ahead run and a 4-3 lead.
Â
Robinson entered Saturday's game only three defensive assists away from breaking AJ Hall's all-time record of 502 assists set from 1991-94. In the sixth inning, Robinson fielded a grounder to end the inning and established a new Texan Baseball career record with 503 assists.
Â
Robinson added an RBI in the sixth when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Â
Trevor Renfro picked up his second win of the season after going five innings and striking out six for the Texans. This was Renfro's longest outing of the season and his six strike outs matched a season best.
Â
Hunter Houston continues to dazzle on the mound as the right-hander went two innings without allowing a run and earning his second save of the season. Houston has eight straight scoreless outings to start the season. Opponents are hitting just .156 off of Houston in 13 innings while striking out 16 and only walking five.
Â
Game 2: Tarleton 18, A&M-Kingsville 1
Â
The hits and runs came in bunches once again for Tarleton.
Â
A game after scoring more runs than they had in over a month, the Texans pounded Kingsville with a season-high 18 runs on 16 hits, including another season-high four home runs.
Â
The Texans opened the bottom of the first with four runs behind three extra-base hits. Alec Humprhey's drove home
Jonathan Schmitz with a triple for the game's first run.
Brandon Villeneuve smashed his third home run of the season to left for a two-run shot that gave the Texans a 3-0 lead.
Kevin Meredith's double down the right-field line was the first of four hits for the senior.
Â
After Villeneuve's RBI double started the second-inning scoring, Meredith lined a two-run homer over 365-foot sign out in left-center field for a commanding 7-0 lead through two innings.
Â
Villeneuve drove in three runs and scored three of his own in a 2-for-3 day at the plate.
Â
While the Texans' offense was piling up runs,
Kyle Gottardy was posting zeros on the mound for Tarleton.
Â
Gottardy (1-4) registered his first win of the season after throwing five innings of three-hit ball and only surrendering one run. The three hits were the fewest Gottardy has given up this season in seven starts.
Â
The Texans scored at least two runs every inning through five. Out of their 16 hits, the Texans had 12 extra-base hits, the most they've had on the season.
Â
Meredith led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to left for his second of the game and his team-leading sixth of the season. Andy Jacobi followed Meredith and on the next pitch, the senior launched a pinch-hit home run to right for his first homer of the season.
Â
Meredith flooded the box score, finishing 4-for-4 with two doubles, two home runs, four runs scored and drove in three runs.
Â
Jonathan Schmitz walked twice and scored two runs for Tarleton to push his streak of reaching base to 12 straight games. Schmitz leads the Lone Star Conference with a .429 batting average and a .538 on-base percentage.
Â
Four other Texans had two hits in the rout.
Alec Humphreys went 2-for-3 with three RBI;
Landon Merka went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and RBIs; and
Matt Olive finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run for the Texans.
