TexAnn Softball splits Saturday doubleheader with Cameron, splits series

Erika Menchaca hit two runs on Saturday to lead the TexAnns

LAWTON, Okla. – Tarleton Softball split the Saturday doubleheader with Cameron for the second straight day to split the four-game series. The TexAnns are now 22-18 and 9-9 in the Lone Star Conference.

Game 1: Cameron 6, Tarleton 1

Cameron's five-run first inning was the difference in Saturday's doubleheader opener with the Aggies taking advantage of two Tarleton errors.

Shelby Hedrick replaced Haley Freyman (15-10) in the circle in the first inning and went the distance allowing only three hits in the final five innings.

The six innings pitched for Hedrick matched her season high, which she also did on Feb. 14 against Metro St.

Cameron had six hits in the first inning, including a two-run double by Lauren Renneker.

Erika Menchaca homered to right in the sixth inning for Tarleton's lone run of the game. It was Menchaca's seventh home run of the season.

Menchaca added a single in the fourth inning to lead the TexAnn offense with a 2-for-3 game. The sophomore first baseman is hitting .384 on the year.

Savannah Stech went 1-for-4 with a third-inning single. Stech has now reached base in nine straight games and is hitting .348.

Mikayla Stogsdill went 1-for-3 at the plate and Rebekah Allen walked twice for the TexAnns.

Tarleton left seven runners on base in the opener.

Game 2: Tarleton 6, Cameron 5

The TexAnns broke out for 10 hits by seven different players to defeat Cameron 6-5 in the finale of the four-game series.

Mikayla Stogsdill singled in the second after Erika Menchaca reached base with a hit by pitch to start the inning. Delaney Wayland followed with an infield single to second to load the bases with one out.

Taylor Fitzgerald's pinch-hit double to center field scored Menchaca and Stogsdill to give Tarleton the early 2-0 lead.

Wayland's steal of home gave the TexAnns a 3-0 advantage.

Menchaca's power display continued in Game 2 when the sophomore launched a two-run home run to centerfield that scored Nyka Wood and put the TexAnns up 5-0.

Menchaca, who went 1-for-3 and also scored two runs, leads the TexAnns with eight long balls on the season after her two home runs on Saturday.

Brenna Hennan made her seventh start in the circle for Tarleton in Game 2 and went 2 2/3 innings giving up three hits and two earned runs while striking out three.

Haley Freyman came on in relief for Hennan in the third inning after Cameron scored two runs on Lauren Renneker's home run. Freyman got out of a two-on, two-out jam to maintain a 5-2 lead.

Freyman went 2 1/3 innings for the TexAnns, allowing three runs—only one earned—to notch her team-leading 16th win of the season. Freyman (16-10) is tied for the Lone Star Conference lead in wins and the freshman moved into a tie for seventh on Tarleton's single-season win list (A.J. Bristow, 2004).

Savannah Stech singled in the fourth and later scored on Wood's RBI single to right.

Stech finished 2-for-3 at the plate and Wood added two hits of her own, going 2-for-4.

With Tarleton leading 6-2 through four innings, Cameron attempted a late-inning comeback when they added a run in the fifth on a solo home run by Tara Martini and two runs in the sixth behind two Tarleton errors.

Shelby Hedrick came in to pitch for Freyman in the sixth and threw two scoreless innings allowing only one base runner to earn her first save of the season.

The TexAnns will take on A&M-Kingsville in a four-game series starting Friday, April 17 for the final home series at the Tarleton Softball Complex.
