Tarleton 12-13, 6-9 in Lone Star Conference | Eastern New Mexico 9-19, 5-11
The GamesÂ
Tarleton State Baseball will host a four-game series against Eastern New Mexico with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
Â
The BreakdownÂ
With the Texans and Greyhounds originally scheduled to play a three-game series, the coaches agreed to add a fourth game this weekend to make up a game from the canceled four-game series in New Mexico because of the winter weather in March. Game 1 will be a seven-inning game at 1 p.m. on Friday and Game 2 will be a nine-inning game following the conclusion of the opener. The same schedule follows for Saturday.
Â
The OpponentÂ
Eastern New Mexico comes to Stephenville with a 9-19 record on the season and at the bottom of the Lone Star Conference with a 5-11 record. The Greyhounds are 2-11 on the road, having lost their last seven away from Portales. Eastern New Mexico has a team ERA of 6.24 with Cody Pope's 4.07 ERA and 4-3 record leading all starters. The Greyhounds are hitting .264 as a team and are led by Justin Paul's team-best .322 batting averaging.
Â
The SeriesÂ
After this weekend, the Texans and Greyhounds will have played each other 102 in the all-time series, with Tarleton leading the series 60-37-1 coming into Friday. This is the first matchup between the two Lone Star Conference schools this season, but Eastern New Mexico has won the last three dating back to 2014. Tarleton has won 10 of 11 at home against Eastern New Mexico since 2011.
Â
The Quest For 200Â
Head coach
Bryan Conger enters this weekend's series with 195 career victories as the head coach of the Texans. He is five wins away from reaching the 200 mark that only Tarleton Hall of Fame coach, Jack Allen, has eclipsed since Tarleton reinstated baseball in 1988. Conger has the second-most wins in Tarleton's new-era history behind Allen (565) and ahead of his immediate predecessor, Trey Felan (145).
Â
Atop the LeaderboardÂ
It seems anytime
Jonathan Schmitz comes to the plate, he finds a way to get on base. At least over half the time, that is. Schmitz leads the Lone Star Conference with a .530 on-base percentage and has reached base in 13 straight games. The junior catcher also has a conference-best .418 batting average – the only .400 hitter in the league.
Kevin Meredith leads the Lone Star Conference with six home runs.
Â
LSC Hitter of the WeekÂ
Landon Merka was named Lone Star Conference hitter of the week after his offensive performance against A&M-Kingsville. The junior second baseman hit .429 for the weekend with over half of his hits going for extra bases while driving in a team-high six RBIs. In the three Tarleton wins, Merka went 6-10 for a .600 average with two doubles, two triples, all six of his RBIs and five runs scored.
Â
Up Next For TarletonÂ
After the four-game series versus Eastern New Mexico, the Texans will head to Angelo to start a six-game road trip with a three-game series against the Rams starting April 10.
