Five Texans score in double figures as No. 10 Tarleton tops ENMU

STEPHENVILLE - No. 10 Tarleton had five players score in double figures to lead the Texans over Eastern New Mexico 89-71 at Wisdom Gym.

Charles Hill was coming off a career-high 25 points against Midwestern State and the senior guard followed up with a game-high 22 points. Hill was 10-17 from the floor and added four rebounds and three assists. The 22 points by Hill marks the seventh straight game Tarleton has had a 20-point scorer against Eastern New Mexico.

Tarleton (14-3, 4-1) shot a season-high 60 percent from the floor and 40 percent from 3-point range to give the Texans eight straight wins over the Greyhounds and the 20th straight win over ENMU in Wisdom Gym. The Texans came in averaging 46 percent shooting and only 29 percent on 3s.

Tarleton went on an early 12-0 run to jump out to a 13-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game. During the scoring spree, EJ Reed had a pair of dunks and Nosa Ebomwonyi drained a corner 3-pointer on an assist from Michael Hardge.

Hardge's passing ability tends to be the key to Tarleton winning games. When the senior guard has five or more assists, the Texans are now 19-2 all time. Hardge dished out a game-high nine assists to go with 15 points and three steals. Hardge now has 282 career assists and passes Tarleton associate head coach Chris Reisman for eighth on the all-time list.

The Greyhounds (4-13, 0-5) would get to within 13-11 before Tarleton responded with a 10-2 run highlighted by an Xavier Smith 3-pointer and Hardge's breakaway reverse dunk to give the Texans a 23-13 advantage.

Smith is known for his defensive presence but the 6-foot-8 forward displayed his offensive abilities tonight with 13 points on 5-6 shooting from the floor and connecting on both 3-pointers he attempted.

Smith and the rest of the Texans shot a scorching 59 percent from the floor in the first half for a 40-30 halftime lead. The Texans forced Eastern New Mexico into 10 first-half turnovers that turned into 16 points for Tarleton.

Whenever Eastern New Mexico would get within striking distance of Tarleton, the Texans always had an answer. Leading 51-45 with 13:16 left in the second half, Tarleton went on an 8-0 run with Deshawn Riddick's 3-point bucket providing the spark. Riddick went for 11 points tonight on 4-6 shooting including three 3-pointers.

Reed scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half with eight points coming in the final nine minutes of the game. Reed, who came in averaging 19.6 points per game, has now scored in double figures in all 17 games this season.

Tarleton would close the game out on an 11-3 run and went 4-6 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes of the game.
