Tarleton rides big first quarter to win in Wisdom over Greyhounds

STEPHENVILLE – Led by 17 points from Bailey Wipff, Tarleton got back to its winning ways Wednesday night with a 56-51 victory over Eastern New Mexico in Wisdom Gym.

Wipff, who is the league's second-leading scorer at 16.8 points per game in conference play, shot .400 from the floor and went 7-8 at the charity stripe to go along with a pair of rebounds and one assist as the TexAnns snapped their two-game losing skid. The win also marked the 18th consecutive victory for Tarleton against Eastern New Mexico in the series.

Breanna Fuller, who earned her second career start and went for nine points and eight rebounds on the night, got the scoring started with a layup off a dish from Wipff to start a 10-0 TexAnn run. Four different players scored during the game's opening run, including Morgan Ashmore, Ikpeaku Iwobi, and Wipff.

After Tarleton went into the second quarter with an eight-point lead, the Greyhounds pushed back and cut the game to 30-28 at halftime. Tarleton trailed through most of the third, never by more than three, and went into the final frame in a 40-40 tie.

Tiara Tatum got things started in the fourth with a layup as she, Raven McGrath, and Fuller put down buckets on three straight possessions to extend the TexAnn lead to 46-40.

Eastern New Mexico evened things up at 51-51, but the TexAnn defense clamped down as the Greyhounds went 0-3 from the floor and turned it over once in the final 1:45 of the game. Meanwhile, the TexAnns went 5-6 at the line, including three from Wipff and two from Tatum, to seal the deal and deliver Tarleton its ninth win of the season.

Behind Wipff and Fuller, Tarleton got 17 points off the bench from Tatum (7), Travanti Downes (6), and Averie Mack (4) while the remaining points came from Iwobi (6), McGrath (4) and Ashmore (3). As a team, the TexAnns shot .386 from the floor and .783 at the free throw line while holding the Greyhounds to .373 from the floor and .700 at the charity stripe.

Tarleton also forced 24 turnovers and converted them into 19 points on the offensive end.

The TexAnns (9-8, 3-4) will hit the road this weekend for a Saturday afternoon showdown with the nation's No. 8 team, West Texas A&M, in Canyon at 2 p.m. The pregame show on the Tarleton Sports Network presented by North Texas Ford Dealers will begin at 1:45 p.m. on 90.5 FM in Stephenville or online at TarletonSports.com/ListenLive.
