STEPHENVILLE – No. 10 Tarleton held off Concordia-Irvine 67-58 in a nonconference game on Saturday at Wisdom Gym to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Ridell Camidge led all scorers with 15 points for the third straight game as the Texans had four players score in double figures. ÂThe Texans held the Eagles to a season low in points and shot 36 percent from the floor while limiting CUI to 35 percent shooting on the game. Tarleton has won its first three games to start the season for the fourth straight year.
The Texans got off to a hot start with an 11-3 lead in the first 6:30 of play with all of the points coming in the paint or at the free-throw line. Camidge hit two of his three 3-pointers on back-to-back scoring possessions for a 17-11 lead, but the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to cut it back to a 1-point game with 8:03 left in the half. CUI tied the game at 27 with 1:43 remaining in the half, but
Stephen Edwards' jumper and a pair of free-throws from
Chantz Chambers gave Tarleton a 31-29 lead at the break.
Tarleton shot 37 percent from the floor in the first half and had nine turnovers compared to Concordia-Irvine's 40 percent shooting to only six turnovers.
After CUI tied the game at 31 on the first possession of the second half, the Texans responded with a quick 7-0 run on a pair of lay-ups from
Romond Jenkins and a 3-pointer from Chambers and the Texans never trailed again. Jenkins finished with his second double-double in as many games, posting 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in 24 minutes of play.
A pair of free throws from Camidge gave Tarleton its first double-digit lead of the game at 48-37 with 9:13 to go. Camidge went 4-4 at the line and has made all 14 of his free-throw attempts to start the season. A dunk from
Josh Hawley and another 3-pointer from Camidge gave the Texans their biggest lead of the game, 53-40.
The Texans won the game at the free-throw line down the stretch, going 18-20 in the final nine minutes and 10-10 in the final minute after CUI got to within six points of the Texans. Tarleton shot a season-best 81 percent at the free-throw line (27-33) and its 27 made free throws are the most since the Texans made 29 against Bacone on Nov. 21 of last season.
Hawley provided a spark off the bench, scoring a season-high 13 points and matching his personal bests in rebound (6) and blocks (2). Chambers also scored in double figures with 11 points, nine of which came in the second half. Chambers grabbed six rebounds and didn't turn the ball over in 29 minutes of action.
Anthony Davis and
Denzel Smith each scored five points, while
Deshawn Riddick put up four points and dished out a team-high three assists. Edwards finished the game with four points and two assists.
Tarleton will host its annual Thanksgiving Classic with games against Colorado State-Pueblo on Nov. 25 and Emmanuel College on Nov. 26.
