TexAnns top Colorado State-Pueblo, Adams State for day-two sweep of regional foes

CANYON – No. 10 Tarleton got back in the win column with a day-two sweep of Colorado State-Pueblo and Adams State in Canyon at the West Texas A&M Invitational.

Game 1: No. 10 Tarleton 5, Colorado State-Pueblo 2

It didn't take the No. 10 team in the country too long to avenge yesterday's losses as the Tarleton TexAnns handled Colorado State-Pueblo 5-2 in the third game of the West Texas A&M Invitational in Canyon.

It started right away in the top of the first inning when Katelyn Conlee blasted off to right field for her second home run of the season and the 19th of her career for a 1-0 Tarleton lead.

After Haley Freyman sat the Thunderwolves down in order in the bottom of the first, Tarleton tacked on another run in the second when Avery Mullendore's single into right field brought home Mikayla Stogsdill from second base. Stogsdill led off the inning with an infield single.

The Thunderwolves evened the score in the second with a two spot, one of which was unearned, but the TexAnn offense continued to add to their side of the run column with two runs of their own. The Tarleton surge started with a triple into right field by Lauren Powers, who came in to score on an error during the next at bat. Tarleton loaded the bases and added one more on a Delaney Wayland walk to put the TexAnns up 4-2 after two and a half.

Tarleton would tack on its final run in the fourth inning when Nyka Wood brought home Powers with a sacrifice fly for a 5-2.

Meanwhile, Freyman was dealing.

The Tarleton sophomore threw her sixth complete game of the season and the 19th of her young career with all seven innings of work. She allowed two runs – only one earned – on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts en route to her sixth win of the season and 29th of her career. She is one win away from becoming the seventh TexAnn pitcher in school history with 30 career wins.

Freyman's offense gave her plenty of support with 11 base hits, including a 3-for-4 day at the dish from Powers. Conlee and Stogsdill each had two hits while Wood, Rebeka Allen, Wayland, and Mullendore had one hit each.

Game 2: No. 10 Tarleton 6, Adams State 2

After rallying from a first-inning deficit, Tarleton's Alyssa Ringhausen threw six scoreless frames as the TexAnn offense came to life and pounded Adams State 6-2 to sweep the second day of the WT Invitational at Buffalo Sports Park.

The Grizzlies opened the game with a two spot in the top of the first inning to go up 2-0, which would carry until the bottom of the second when the TexAnns came to life.

Nyka Wood doubled to lead things off and Rebeka Allen followed up with a single to put runners on the corners with no one out. Mikayla Stogsdill brought Wood across for the first Tarleton run of the game with an RBI infield single. Allen and Stogsdill would each come around to score on a wild pitch to put the TexAnns up 3-2 after two.

After Ringhausen retired the side in order in the third, Tarleton took advantage of a two-out error when Wood ripped an RBI single into right field to score Katelyn Conlee for a 4-2 lead. Tarleton added its final two runs of the game on RBI singles in the fifth inning from Stogsdill and Taylor Fitzgerald for the definitive 6-2 lead.

Meanwhile, Ringhausen capped off her third career complete game performance by standing the bases loaded in the seventh inning with her seventh swinging strikeout of the game. Ringhausen earned her first win of the season with seven innings of two-run softball, only one of which was earned. She allowed eight hits and a walk to go along with her seven K's.

The offense provided her with nine base hits en route to six runs, including two-hit efforts from Wood and Stogsdill. Melody Mayse, Conlee, Allen, Fitzgerald, and Delaney Wayland had one hit each.

Tarleton will wrap up the WT invitational with a Sunday afternoon rematch with Lubbock Christian at 2 p.m.
