Stogsdill’s three-RBI day lifts No. 10 Tarleton past Lubbock Christian in tournament finale

CANYON – A three-RBI triple from Mikayla Stogsdill keyed a five-run third inning that lifted the No. 10 Tarleton TexAnns to a 6-2 win over Lubbock Christian in the final game of the West Texas A&M Invitational.

"Mikayla was so instrumental in our offensive success today," said head coach Julie Mata. "Avery Mullendore stepped up big for us at third base all weekend. As a team, we did a great job of bouncing back from a rocky start with a few of our starters out sick. I was impressed with the adjustments we made against some high quality teams. The weekend will really help us in the long run."

After Lubbock Christian got one in the top of the first, the Lady Chaps took a 1-0 lead into the third inning before the TexAnn offense broke the game wide open.

Mullendore got things started with a one-out single into right, which ultimately turned into her standing on third base after a two-base error. Melody Mayse cashed in and reached first on another LCU miscue. Tarleton then loaded the bases with a fielder's choice from Lauren Powers and a walk to Katelyn Conlee.

Rebeka Allen coaxed an RBI walk to put Tarleton on top 2-1 and then Stogsdill struck for the big blow of the inning with a triple down the right field line to unload the bases. Her three RBIs put Tarleton on top 5-2.

After Haley Freyman answered with a goose egg in the next half inning, Tarleton tacked on one more run with a sacrifice fly from Mayse to bring home Delaney Wayland. Wayland led off the inning with a double and moved to third with a sacrifice bunt from Mullendore.

Despite an RBI single in the sixth, Freyman had no problem finishing off her 30th career win – making her just one of seven TexAnns in school history with at least 30 wins in her career. She threw all seven innings for her seventh complete game in 10 appearances this season – which is also the 20th of her career. She allowed two runs – one earned – on 10 hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

As a team, Tarleton had five hits with one each coming from Conlee, Wood, Stogsdill, Wayland, and Mullendore.

The TexAnns will return to action next weekend at the Rattler Invitational in San Antonio for their final pre-conference tournament of the season.
